“Spanning the centuries in the Savernake Forest”
Reviewed 17 September 2010

Being keen walkers, my husband and I have walked many hundreds of miles in Wiltshire but had barely scratched the surface of the Savernake Forest. As a surprise for my sister and her husband who were on holiday here from Australia, I arranged a 'Wiltshire Walk' in Savernake last weekend for the 4 of us. There are a large selection of walks from which to choose or they can be tailored to suit your specific interests. I chose S9, Northern Named Trees. It was a fascinating and wonderful day and we got to see many named and other ancient trees whilst following little known paths. We also saw a number of interesting sites from WWII when the forest was in use by the army.
Not only that, but we were introduced to the fast-growing activity of geo-caching and were delighted to find a young family in the act of examining a cache.
We took a picnic with us and Peter chose a tranquil spot for us to eat and rest, halfway through the walk.
At the end of the walk we were given folders containing information on the general history of the area, maps and photos of the points of interest and information about the named trees.
We were all agreed it was a great day out and a highlight of our time together.
Wiltshire Walks offers a wide variety of walks and activities, including guided walks around Avebury, local villages, courses on subjects such as map and compass reading, geocaching and dowsing.
Highly recommended - we will do this again.
