“Lovely Location, great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2011

I have had a look at some of the other reviews about this hotel and honestly cant believe them. I had a lovely stay here and the staff were very welcoming. The food was outstanding, however, a little bit pricey.

Rooms are clean and comfortable, free wifi throughout the complex was also a added bonus that many of the large chains still do not offer.

The room was excellent. The receptionist on our arrival was very helpful especially as we were early. However,in the evening, when we wanted to get into the hotel to go to the bar at 9:30pm the door was locked. Eventually we were allowed in by a surly young man who seemed reluctant to serve us drinks.
On our departure the receptionist was from the same mould as the barman - very surly and unhelpful.
It was a shame that our stay is remembered by this.

Stayed at the Sonning on Sunday night following a family get together at the hotel for lunch. Staff were unattentive at lunch and at times were downright abrupt to members of my family. Food was no better than average, dessert being a defrosted bought in cheesecake which was soggy. No meals available at the hotel on a Sunday evening so went to the Bull Inn just across the road almost, next to the Church which was splendid. Had we known of the Bull, we would have definitely opted to stay there. Came back to the Great House hotel at 9.30pm to find everywhere locked and dark. Lights on in the reception so we rang the bell as we'd been told the bars would be open, there were sign boards out on the street stating that the bars were open until 11pm. A member of staff came to the door and informed us they were closed, then asked in a surly manner whether we were guests. We said yes and were allowed into the reception area. My husband was treated very rudely by Manuel who would not serve us until we'd shown proof that we were guests at the hotel. The hotel was deserted, dark and unwelcoming, very different to the bustling and pleasant Bull Inn that we'd just left. We were served very half heartedly and told that if we wanted anything else, we had to go to reception to call him back. The bar area remained closed up. Appalling end to our stay. Never again.

Decent enough hotel in a lovely village. The rooms are pretty standard (if not in the main building, get one in the new out house and NOT in the old one) and offer good value for money. Great area for some after dinner walks. Full english breakfast ok but not special, did not take the plunge to have dinner there.

Booked a family meal, arrived at the restaurant at 8.00pm but our order was taken 45 minutes later after I had to go and find a member of staff to take it from then on the service got slower and slower finally finishing at 11.15pm when we had enough and asked for the bill. We refused to pay for the service charge but that was included in the set price we asked to have it removed but they said NO. Went back two days later to speak to the manager in charge got the owner and because we complain about the service he told us not to come back here again in a very abrupt manner.
So all in all if you are looking for good food but slow service this is the place to go

Did not stay, but ate here for Sunday Lunch. Very good value with set prices for 2 or 3 courses. After a very long wait for the starter (Just about to enquire, when the staff spotted we were waiting and the food soon arrived). The subsequent gaps betwen courses was perfect. Although not a sunny day, we were able to sit outside to enjoy coffee on the terrace with the Thames at the bottom of the lawn.
