The Great House At Sonning
Reviewed 6 February 2012

Have just returned from this beautiful hotel. We booked an executive room as it was a special occasion and were not disappointed. The room was very big and had every facility we could have asked for. We also visited The Mill at Sonning which is just a stroll away-just as well with the snow! Breakfast was very tasty and the staff lovely. Will definately return

Room Tip: Executive room in new block was spacious and very comfortable

Stayed here for 2 nights in April 2011as we were visiting the Mill At Sonning Dinner
Theatre.Really enjoyed the stay.Nice room, good breakfast, good price as we obtained
a special deal because we booked theatre tickets. It's in a lovely spot overlooking the
River Thames.Would have no hesitation in stopping here again in the future.

The room we were assigned was massive and pleasantly decorated. It was spotlessly clean but lacked any character, which was a shame. Breakfast was very good and the evening meal was well presented and very tasty - couldn't fault it.. I can't see how the other reviews slated the food - our experience was excellent.

The bar area is like a doctors waiting room - so we went to the Bull which is just through the cemetery opposite and oozes atmosphere and character.

Saturday morning was woken up at 8 by the gardener strimming the bank to the side of the hotel, this continued for about 3 hours. I realise this has to be done, but really not on a Saturday or at 8 in the morning.

I probably would stay there again if the Bull was full as it was on this particular weekend.

Room Tip: If you want a large room stay in the clock tower - the modern part of the building

A poor experience - anonymous room with furniture that appeared to have shrunk, so it no longer filled the space; two near empty pillows; blankets not duvets; early morning grass cutting outside the window; a maze challenge to find breakfast, badly tuned tv.

On my blacklist which is a pity as the Mill was great.

Room Tip: stay elsewhere

I have had a look at some of the other reviews about this hotel and honestly cant believe them. I had a lovely stay here and the staff were very welcoming. The food was outstanding, however, a little bit pricey.

Rooms are clean and comfortable, free wifi throughout the complex was also a added bonus that many of the large chains still do not offer.

Would recommend

The room was excellent. The receptionist on our arrival was very helpful especially as we were early. However,in the evening, when we wanted to get into the hotel to go to the bar at 9:30pm the door was locked. Eventually we were allowed in by a surly young man who seemed reluctant to serve us drinks.
On our departure the receptionist was from the same mould as the barman - very surly and unhelpful.
It was a shame that our stay is remembered by this.

Stayed at the Sonning on Sunday night following a family get together at the hotel for lunch. Staff were unattentive at lunch and at times were downright abrupt to members of my family. Food was no better than average, dessert being a defrosted bought in cheesecake which was soggy. No meals available at the hotel on a Sunday evening so went to the Bull Inn just across the road almost, next to the Church which was splendid. Had we known of the Bull, we would have definitely opted to stay there. Came back to the Great House hotel at 9.30pm to find everywhere locked and dark. Lights on in the reception so we rang the bell as we'd been told the bars would be open, there were sign boards out on the street stating that the bars were open until 11pm. A member of staff came to the door and informed us they were closed, then asked in a surly manner whether we were guests. We said yes and were allowed into the reception area. My husband was treated very rudely by Manuel who would not serve us until we'd shown proof that we were guests at the hotel. The hotel was deserted, dark and unwelcoming, very different to the bustling and pleasant Bull Inn that we'd just left. We were served very half heartedly and told that if we wanted anything else, we had to go to reception to call him back. The bar area remained closed up. Appalling end to our stay. Never again.
