“A Mixed Bag”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

We liked the location and the walks nearby. The Hotel certainly has a pleasant first impression and the receptionist was very welcoming. The room was large with a four poster bed which looked nice. Now this is where things are not quite as good. The lighting in the room was inadequate to read by after dark and the bathroom was very poor and in need of refurbishment.

Breakfast was fairly standard fare although I’m still mystified as to how we could be refused poached eggs (which were on the menu) because they weren’t ready!!! How long does it take to poach an egg?

To sum up, the hotel was pleasant, but I would expect a better bathroom for a four star hotel (we had a far superior bathroom on a recent stay an Ibis Hotel). I was happy because of the rate we got from Bookings.com but I would have been disappointed with value for money had I paid the advertised rate on the hotel’s own website.

This was planned as a romantic night away. Everything was right on target right from the word go.When we booked in we were told that our reservation had been upgraded to a river facing room. The view from the room was superb, the room was just as we wanted it to be. As one might imagine dinner was a Valentines themed menu. I am not usually a fan of 'nouvelle cuisine',but found it easy to make an exception. Breakfast the following morning was to the same standard. Even the napkins were linen (Rather unusual for breakfast these days.) This was a return visit after a lengthy gap. In that time the hotel has lost none of its charm, nor has the attention to detail given by the staff. .

Our party of four has just returned from a New Years break at the Swan and have had a wonderful time. Every aspect of our stay was planned by the hotel to provide a great experience. Our rooms were spacious and had a spectacular view over the river. The location of the Swan is one of the most beautiful on the Thames.
The New Years celebrations started with a Champagne reception and the hotel were very generous with the champagne and continually topped up our glasses. Dinner was served in the beautiful riverside restuarant and the food was delicious. A six course meal was served and was to a very high standard. All the guest were in high spirits for the evening ahead. After dinner we were led through to the function room where we were seated at our tables and a live band entertained us for the rest of the evening. The staff were still on hand to top up our drinks and at twelve the band connected us to the sound of Big Ben. It was a great evening and everyone danced the night away.
The rest of the stay was thoroughly enjoyable as we took walks along the river and relaxed in the drawing rooms reading the newspapers. I would definately recommend this break to my friends and hope to go back there again myself. I would like to thank the staff and management of the Swan for making our stay so memorable.

We stayed two nights with a group of friends for the New Year dinner and dance. Staff were very helpful, discrete and courteous. Enabled us all to fully relax and unwind. We had a large first floor room with a nice view of the river, 4 poster bed and a balcony. Clean, spacious and quiet.

New Year's Eve dinner and dance was very well organised with very good food, good service, nice hats and crackers, a versatile three piece band with a great vocalist and especially good company. Would recommend.

The eggs benedict for New Year's day breakfast/brunch that extended from 10 until 2 was a nice touch.

The hotel does not suffer from the somewhat sterile atmosphere of the larger chain hotels but has an air of casual comfort. Riverside setting is lovely with nice walks available into the villages of Goring and Streatley or further along the Thames towpath to Pangbourne.

I was one of a party who had Christmas lunch at the Swan. At a price of £85 per adult I was expecting excellent food and service. The food was good but the service was truely apalling and totally ruined the visit. For two of the three courses the dishes were served but three of the party had to wait an additional 10 minutes for their food. For the third course only two of the party had to wait but still for an extra 10 minutes, We even had to ask for the mince pies to be served since these were totally forgotten. Not recommended, I felyt very badly treated for the price tag.

We had a get together recently, meant to have a Discounted Rate, but ended up paying £99 for a very small single bedded room, the lunch was great, and the views and position are lovely especially in the Summer, right by the Thames, the staff were courteous, and when there was a problem with the room I was transferred to another with no argument, the Hotel could do with a bit of TLC, but having said that, it is a lovely hotel, I was slightly disappointed that I was not put into a more spacious room considering it was not full, and a number of our party were staying the night, it would not stop me from staying there again

I totally agree with previous reviews about this hotel - very friendly staff and great location for a restful stay but hotel in desperate need of refurbishment. Reception staff are very welcoming but we didn't like the room originally allocated to us. There is no lift at the hotel and we had to walk down a long corridor, through the bar and lounge areas, then another lounge until we found a rather unattractive annexe linking the original old part of the hotel with the new. Up a flight of stairs to a damp and mouldy-smelling landing to a room tucked well into the eaves. I noticed at once the rotting window frames which had been mentioned in another review...the whole room (Room 25) was dark and miserable though spacious enough. However the Receptionist found us another room immediately, on the ground floor and in the newer conference area. The room was very large with double doors leading onto the garden area. Lighting was poor and braiding on the headboard hanging off. The bathroom hasn't been touched in years - 1980's Ideal Standard tiles and no attempt at "prettying up" the sink or bath area. We had lunch in a nice area overlooking the river which is delightful and our evening meal did not disappoint. Service is good and the food is superb - presented in a very contemporary way with grey slate plates and lovely complimentary soup in a cup between the courses. Breakfast also good and piping hot.
In spite of the shabbiness of the hotel we would consider coming back perhaps during better weather - it must be lovely to sit outside on the patio area or in the gardens overlooking the river. The ladies' toilets are very dated, 'tho spotlessly clean . I am surprised these have not been updated as it must be a disappointment to any bride and her guests to have to use these toilets. It seems that the owners of the hotel are getting by on the reputation of the location for weddings (and it is extremely lovely) but it is time to address the issue of refurbishment. Some attempt has been made to do this in the public areas, new carpet and curtains but attention to detail is needed....sofas need recovering and a coat of paint everywhere would liven it up. My only other criticism is that I left my mobile number in the health spa for the beautician to call me to discuss an appointment for a manicure but she never did call. However, on the whole our stay was a pleasant one and we are considering coming back in the summer with our family for a special anniversary celebration. I couldn't think of anything nicer than sitting on the lawns by the river having afternoon tea. (Just hope we won't need the loo!)
