“Heavenly Bishops Quay”

Myself, parents and other members of our family have stayed at Bishops Quay every year, sometimes more than once, for the last 14 years. I cannot recommend it enough. The house is cosy and welcoming, the hosts are the nicest people I know, the setting is quiet and beautiful, but never boring with wonderful views. There is so much to do and see in the area. I would highly recommend this as beautiful place to stay whilst exploring a wonderful part of England.

“The best holiday cottage on the Helford river”
Reviewed September 23, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

The house has the most beautiful view on the river. It is very peaceful, the only sounds are the cries of the birds on the water, or the occasional hum of the fishing boats putting to sea. The Kirby family live next door, and are always on hand if you need them, but they are completely unobtrusive. The house is extremely comfortable and is more like a home than a rented house. It has good beds and bathrooms, a well equipped kitchen and a beautifully cosy sitting room with a real coal fire to take the chill off Cornish evenings. You have direct access to the river, and you can rent boats or kayaks to take up the river for picnics. You can even buy fresh fish on the quay when the catch comes in. The house is full of fresh flowers from Mrs Kirby's garden, she will bake you a delicious welcome cake for your arrival and leave fresh eggs from her hens. The house is in quiet countryside, but there is good food shopping in Mawgan, and a great local restaurant and fitness club/spa at nearby Trelowaren. It is an idyllic place, and we have been holidaying there with our teenage children and friends for five years.

It's now 15 years since we first went to Bishop's Quay and it still casts the same magical spell as it did on our first visit. This time we were celebrating our Ruby anniversary and Kate's welcoming surprises were appreciated so deeply and were a reflection of the fabulous hospitality that is always a feature of the holiday. Kate and Ben go about their daily lives in such a way that it is easy to forget that they live nearby and in such a beautiful spot privacy and peace are easy to find if required. If you or your family like boating then this is just the job - an Arthur Ransome location. The accommodation is extremely comfortable, has so much character and everything is provided even down to fresh flowers in every room. This is a very, very special place.

“A little piece of Cornish heaven”

Part of me wants to keep Bishops Quay as a treasured secret, but the other part wants to say don't hesitate to book your stay here right now.

Bishops Quay is a gorgeous property right on the Helford River with a balcony that gets the sun from morning till it goes down at night. It has its own very private garden with table and chairs looking straight out over the private quay. Visitors have the use of a small motor boat (at a very reasonable cost) plus a little rowing boat and canoes and kayaks and even a sailing boat if you know how.

Bishops Quay feels very private. It is hidden away at the end of a lane and it is very peaceful: you can't hear any road noise and you can't see any other houses. There aren't even many other boats going by.

If you don't know the Helford River, it is a magical place with ancient woodlands leading right down to the water. It is an estuarine river and one of the joys of staying here is siting on your balcony and watching the tide go in and out. As the water recedes egrets, shelducks, curlews, gulls and the odd cormorant fly down to enjoy the rich pickings on the mudflats. There are even binoculars provided so you can get a closer view of the spectacle.

The house is really comfortable and well equipped. The sitting room looks out onto the balcony and the river beyond. There is everything you could want in terms of entertainment, including flat screen TV, Sky Plus and DVD player. The kitchen has everything you would need and there is a little outhouse with washer dryer and freezer.

The master bedroom is huge with a bay window and window seat where you can perch and look down on the river below. There are windows on all three sides of the room and it almost feels like you are hanging out over the water. It is incredibly quiet at night and the bed is large and very comfortable. You will sleep very soundly indeed.

Now as if this wasn't enough what makes Bishops Quay stand out from the rest are the owners, the lovely Kate and Ben Kirby. On arrival we were greeted by a freshly boiled kettle , a tea set all laid out with delicious cakes and biscuits baked by Kate who is a very, very good baker. There were also fresh eggs from Kate's chickens and a jar of her homemade blackberry and apple jam. For the fish eaters among you (like me) there is also the joy of being able to buy fish straight from Ben's fishing boat as it lands at the quay. Monkfish and dover dole this week: absolutely delicious.

I can't recommend this place highly enough. This is the second time my husband and I have stayed. It is without doubt the best rental property we have stayed in and the welcome from Kate and Ben couldn't be warmer.
