We were met with a warm reception from our host, Hugh MacLennan, who was also very informative about the history and sights of Merrickville. Lovely rooms, with nice personal touches. We were offered a pre-dinner drink on the balcony, and a post-dinner tea on our return from town (just across the bridge and the locks). Excellent breakfast prepared by Debra. Would definitely stay there again.

A group of 6 of us stayed at the Millisle while travelling to the Ottawa area for a wedding in August. I've never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast before and didn't know if early check-in was customary. I called ahead and requested early arrival so we could all have a little extra time to get ready and the host Hugh more than obliged. Originally, we requested the largest of the 3 rooms be ready for early arrival so our group could have the space to get ready on such short notice. We were pleased when we received a phone call on the morning of check in, stating that all 3 of our rooms would be ready for us.

My wife and I traveled with our dog and the Millisle was more than accommodating. Shes still a pup and gets lonely. Debra went upstairs periodically to calm her and check on her when we were away at the wedding. She even called us with an update when the pup had finally settled down to sleep.

We returned early that night as the wedding was outdoors and the weather was quite uncooperative. Hugh and Debra were hosting a dinner for other guests showcasing beef tenderloin and a variety of wine pairings. I cannot speak to this other than the aromas that filled the house, divine!

After tidying up from their dinner hosting, the other guests retired and Hugh offered a few of us wine and chatted away into the evening. He is truly a thoughtful and gracious host. The beds are older, but extremely comfortable and the rooms have everything you would expect from a hospitable room in any hotel. My wife and I stayed in the Georgian suite which had a separate sitting area with TV, DVD player and a selection of movies.

In the morning we were treated to a three course breakfast prepared by Chef Debra. The weather was beautiful and we sat on the veranda enjoying coffee while the meal was prepared. While not common, Hugh arranged the tables such that our group of 6 could all be seated together. The modest price for the room includes breakfast obviously (it's a BnB), but I was shocked there wasn't a premium for what we received. Freshly prepared scones with jam and preserves, fruit, coffee and juice, plus a choice from Frittata, Quiche, smoked salmon/bacon and eggs... the list goes on. My father is an early riser but not compared to Hugh and Chef Debra. They were up at the crack of dawn preparing all breakfast items fresh and from scratch. My wife has tummy troubles and eats Gluten Free. Debra prepared fresh gluten free scones in addition to the selection available to the rest of us. It was truly amazing.

They are a 2 minute walk from the main strip in Merrickville which has shops, restaurants, historical sights, and merchants that sell just about everything. You could make a weekend of shopping and sightseeing right in the little town.

If our travels bring us to this area again, The Millisle will be at the top of our list for places to stay. Thank you to Debra and Hugh for a great stay.

Room Tip: The Georgian suite has extra space and privacy. It has an extra sitting area and is off in its own small "wing" of the house.

My husband and I recently visited the Millisle for the 3rd time. For us, it’s the perfect spot for a getaway. It’s like staying at a tranquil spa resort, where there are only a few guests, and the hosts, Hugh and Debra, take care of everything with humor and generosity. The bed and breakfast is about a block away from the fascinating Rideau river & canal’s historic lock system, and Merrickville itself is everything a village should be, with lovely small shops and restaurants, and not a single big box store or ugly strip mall. The Millisle is less than an hour from beautiful Ottawa with its magnificent embassy mansions, mighty St. Lawrence river and inventive canal system (which we toured by electric boat), as well as Parliament castles and the fairy tale Chateau Laurier hotel.

The rooms at the Inn are comfortable and elegant, and the breakfast is wonderful – we were plied with delicacies from the kitchen. Debra is a Cordon Bleu chef, and it shows in every perfect detail. I can still taste the scones, with fresh butter and a selection of jams and marmalades. We “dined in” the second night (not to be missed!) and Debra prepared an unforgettable Poulet a la Bresse en Croute, with morel mushrooms. Hugh, a former business executive, carefully selected – and documented! – each glass of wine for me, and beer for my husband. He served each in fresh crystal or glass, at exactly the ideal temperature. He entertained us with stories about his Scottish heritage, world events, cinema and history. Sadly, this historic mansion of a Bed and Breakfast is for sale, and we will miss Hugh and Debra if they do sell it.

Room Tip: Love the Georgian Suite

The Millisle B&B is outstanding in every way. We live very close by, and decided to treat ourselves for an afternoon of shopping in Merrickville and an overnight stay. We have stayed at a variety of B&Bs over the years, and Millisle tops them all. We stayed in the charming Georgian suite - a lovely bedroom, sitting room and well-appointed bathroom.
Hugh and Debra, the hosts, are lovely and very welcoming. An extra bonus: a 3-course dinner prepared by chef Debra with wine pairings - we had this extraordinary dinner served in their beautiful dining room. An amazing breakfast was served on their lovely wrap-around patio. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality of the rooms and meals. We had a wonderful time and we will be back soon!

Had a wonderful two night stay here, the hosts are very welcoming and kind. We stayed in the Victoria which is a large room in the top floor with a beautiful claw foot tub! It is clean, comfortable and the Victoria has a little turret room that acts as a reading nook which is very relaxing to curl up in and read a good book!
The breakfast is to die for! Lots of options that are beautifully prepared and plenty of food that you don't feel hungry until the afternoon!
Would recommend to anyone needing a little getaway from the real world for a few days!
