We have stayed twice on trips back forth from Sydney. But will not return. We have never left such negative remarks, nor are we prone to easy complaint. However, we have experienced slack service, dishonesty, despite allowing for communication.
We arrived, checked in via phone as office was unmanned. On entering room, bed (having been raised electrically) was still up in the air, telephoned& waited 12 minutes for staff person to arrive with remote control to put it down. Bathroom not clean, No seal on toilet indicating it had been cleaned. Were told charged wrong rate & refund being organised. Never happened, despite a courtesy call on our behalf. Grounds pictured are not in the same degree of care or management.

Room Tip: Have your total price firmly fixed before you go.. check out the area and compare

Access from the South feels illegal as you cross the highway and things do not get a lot better. The hotel is verry basic, on the outskirts of Mittagong and warning do not use an Amex or you will be hit with a sizable surcharge.

Having stayed At the Poplars Inn numerous times I have always found it to be good value, exceptionally clean, well appointed, and with a very functional mini kitchen equiped with microwave and fridge. With the front doors opening onto a covered veranda one can sit outside with a quiet drink enjoying the front garden and shrubbery.
While the garden currently needs a bit of TLC it is still a relaxing place from which to enjoy a relaxing weekend.

Was a nice room but could do with some airing as had a slight closed up smell. Easy to find at night lovely and quiet but close to most places would stay there again arrived late and the key was left out for me and I was very grateful

We booked this motel as a family of 4 including a child for the Australia Day long long weekend.

Getting to the motel is pretty straightforward as it's located on the Old Hume Highway but driving into it was a bit awkward... You have park onto some solid lines in middle of the highway and cut across it to get into the entrance.

From the front, the motel looks quite nice with paved path and gardens at the front and checking in was a smooth process. At the back, path is compacted gravel so makes turning very noisy. Parking is usually at 45 degree.

Each room is secured by a single wooden door with a latch and windows didn't fully open with only a part that can be lifted up to let in the air.

Entering the room, we were greeted with a waft of stale odour which wasn't very pleasant though manageable. We had to use the air deodoriser provided in the toilet generously to remove the smell.

To the left of the room is a small kitchennette with a microwave, fridge, some coffee/tea and cultery. A plastic kettle is provided but again looked a bit dirty inside so we had to clean it out before boiling some water. Then there was the bathroom with your usual amenities like soap, combined shampoo/conditioner, sink and shower. Soap didn't lather too well but shampoo/conditioner did. However, water pressure was really good!

To the right of the room, two moveable beds were provided and made up well. These were probably ideal beds to sleep in as it's separated from the the highway noise with the wall in between.

At the back of the room (or front depending which way you look at it), there was a spacious room with a queen size bed and a wardrobe with mirror sliding doors. Inside, there was plenty of spare pillows and blankets. Opposite to the bed is a table with a few chairs and sofa. There is a mounted TV and a charging area on the wall (full of crumbled old magazines for some reason). The room has a roof to floor window with the window that you can open to face the highway and let in some air. It's blocked by some thick curtains.

Problem with this room is that it faces the highway and it gets slightly noisy at night. Nothing you can't manage with a pair of ear plugs but you can definitely hear the traffic. In addition, the carpet had dirty patches which looked bad so I tend to wear slippers all the time. Sleep wise, it was good. No bed bugs or anything crazy like that and felt pretty safe. Room was also made up which was a pleasant surprise.

Wifi is provided and a Speedtest revealed 1.66 download vs 1.91 Mbps upload speed. Decent enough for watching Foxtel Go.

Overall, the motel provided good value for money. You don't get many like this for $300 two nights with 2 single beds and a queen bed. An express checkout is offered where you can just lock the key intisde the room and leave before 10am.

The downside is obviously the inherent cleanliness. The motel is clearly outdated and in some serious need of renovation. The current state relies likely on new customers and I highly doubt many would return including us any time soon after staying here. It's not dirty but with stale odours, plentiful carpet/wall stains, dirty kettles and run down bathroom, it has a lot of basic things that can be done to improve the state of affairs.

The feeling is that owners are trying but not trying hard enough. A shame as it has a lot of potential.

Would recommend for budget conscious families but expect some issues with cleanliness.
