OK - for starters, I'm a sucker for historic old hotels that have managed to retain some of the dignity and grandeur that American cities have simply let fall into ruin. I had walked through the lobby of the Omni William Penn several times in previous years, simply to admire the grand lobby and chandeliers, so I was especially pleased when we scored this property on a Priceline bid. In this case, we were there to visit our college-aged son, who stayed with us on a roll-a-way bed. The room was plenty spacious enough to do that, and beautifully decorated in keeping with the era of this beautiful old building.

One could argue as to whether Pittsburgh qualifies for 'big-city' status, but regardless, I found the reception staff to be especially friendly and helpful for a big city hotel, even when confronted with some pesky questions about local directions et al. (I ALWAYS get lost in Pittsburgh!) Had wished there had been time to have a drink in the lobby bar, but we never quite got to that, though the adjoining Starbucks was very handy.

I would gladly pay regular rates to stay at the Omni Penn again - SO much more interesting than the mass-produced Westins and Hyatts these days. Even more excited to hear they are in the midst of renovation. A good sign for the preservation of a grand old lady!

Spent two nights here during the college basketball playoffs and was not impressed. Room was clean but dated. I had more floor space in the bath room in my last cruise cabin. Sink was small with enough room to lay a toothbrush and that's about all. The TV was mounted on the side of the room so you had to turn your head or lay on your side to view. I never like hotels that think they have a great reataurant. They never furnish the room with a "fridg or microwave". Come on, even "Days Inn" gives you those. Vending machines in the hall only took change, no bills or credit cards. Who carries $2 in change for a soda in their pocket. And the biggest complaint is the "WIFI" that cost $9.95 per day in your room. But you could haul your laptop to the lobby (where the coffee shop and restaurant is) and use it free. So I pay $140 a night and still have to pay for WIFI and anyone can walk in off the street and use it for nothing. I understand that running a hotel is a business, but come on guys.

Room Tip: Don't get a corner room.

I recently stayed at the Omni William Penn Hotel for St. Patty's day weekend, and I have to say this is a very nice, clean hotel. The lobby is beautiful. The hotel is right downtown in the middle of everything, you can walk to almost anywhere. The only con I have is with the parking, you have to pay per day to park in a parking garage, the parking lot is directly across the street from the hotel.

Thank you for your complimentary review of The Omni William Penn. We are glad you had a great stay and appreciate your comments regarding parking. We do our best to maintain competitive parking rates but as you will find with most downtown properties our parking options are limited. We hope this did not detract from your overall experience and we hope to have you as our guest again soon.

My wife and I stayed at the Omni William Penn Hotel while we were in town for a university alumni function. First, a bit of disclosure, we held our wedding reception at this hotel in 1996, when it was the Westin William Penn Hotel.

The lobby is as magnificent and as grand as ever. The staff were all friendly, and offered unforced greetings if we were passing them in the lobby or hallways. The front desk staff was efficient and quick to remedy an issue at check in. Our room was updated, and oversized (we had an executive suite), with all the amenities (except the minibar was not stocked at all). Different from some previous reviewers, we did have thermostat control in our room, and it worked well.

Unfortunately, parts of the hotel are undergoing renovation. While there was no noise to disturb us, it appeared the fitness center was not open for use.

I can't comment

Room Tip: Have a seat at the bar in the Palm Court lobby. Danny and Dawn to special care of us, and were as friendly as one expects from local Pittsburghers.

It was a pleasure to read that you and your wife were able to return to the William Penn after being married here 16 years ago. We are pleased that you found the ambiance and staff to be as inviting as you remembered and we hope you will return again soon.

Gorgeous old hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, but a little rough around the edges. Good workout room, decent Terrace restaurant and convenient starbucks. Also good location for downtown business. Service attitude was just average to a bit dour.

Room Tip: ask for a view as many rooms face an alley/brick wall
