The food was excellent. Great atmosphere for a small group. Great service. The food, although excellent, was over-priced. Nice for special occasions.

Took my son here for his birthday, first and last visit. Very overpriced and poor quality. I got a chicken dish that had no flavor, it was suppose to have cheese on top and baked, no cheese and no flavor. Son got strip steak that was so fatty it wasn’t fit to eat and again no flavor. My husband got Prime Rib that tasted nothing like prime rib that was suppose to have peppercorns on top. The sides were the only thing that were good. If I’m spending $130 for 3 people I expect the food to be worth it. Very big let down! Will not return!

On a Friday night before a Penn State University home football game, the town of State College swells many times over with fans who will attend the football the next day. As you walk into the Tavern, you are greeted with hundreds of patrons waiting for their turn to be seated(no reservations); the bar area is jammed with people 3 or 4 deep waiting to get a drink, but the crowd is very civil, patient. Finally, your group is called(we were a group of 12) and you are seated. We were greeted by several wait staff who provided water, took drink orders and provided menus. The menu, BTW, was pretty much what you are offered on a "normal" evening at the Tavern; it was not limited to a few entrees just because it was going to be a busy night(s many restaurants do). The "wait team" did a superb job from drinks to dessert under very abnormal conditions. Our entire group was very pleased with their entire meal; well prepared, good quantity, excellent desserts. Very good experience under very unusual circumstances, but you must be patient!

Wonderful evening with great friends and very nice food. Not a typical college town restaurant, a rustic slightly high end dining, but very reasonably priced. Bring friends and family.

Was so excited to visit this well known restaurant. Heard how great it is! Lovely place with beautiful rustic charm. Server was excellent. Super friendly and attentive. We were ready to enjoy our lunch! Not crowded, as it was a late lunch. Many open tables and it took about 45 minutes to get our meals. I was surprised, but am happy to wait for good food. Oh my goodness, was so disappointed. I ordered a black angus bacon burger. The burger was almost half the size of the bun. It looked like a sausage patty. Three of us ordered that, all looked the same with generic chips ($12.) My daughter ordered a croissant sandwich. I was stunned because I order croissants weekly at the local grocery store. It was a standard criossant not a large one. NOT for a sandwich! I would never use that size for a sandwich, and I make those weekly! Sadly, cannot tell you how disappointed we were with the food.
