“Old, Loud, and Uncomfortable”
Reviewed 10 February 2012

I had heard great things about the "storied" Nittany Lion Inn, so when I actually stayed there for the first time I was highly disappointed. The placed is definitely in need of a major upgrade or face-lift...the beds are rock hard, the pillows are VERY uncomfortable (reminds me of a $3 pillow I bought at Target once), and the heater was loud and rattled all night. In addition, the windows are so old and thin (single pane) that you can clearly hear every CATA bus that drives by on Atherton Street. I was in bed for 10 hours that night and I probably slept less than 5 because of all the noise.

There's a parking lot in front of the building, but it's very under-sized and it's always full so be ready to drag your luggage a long distance from a far away parking deck to the hotel.

I would NOT recommend this place. I've stayed at the State College Days Inn and would recommend it any day over this place. Even the Imperial 3000 is better.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room facing Atherton Street. You'll hear CATA buses driving by all night lon...

Please accept our apologies for what we agree should not have been your experience at the Nittany Lion Inn! We always hope to provide the best personalized service to our guests.
We do offer several types of pillows, including down, and can always note your preferences accordingly for each visit, including requests for quiet rooms. While the parking lot is limited directly in front of the Inn, we do offer complimentary valet parking to the adjacent parking deck should that make your arrival and departure experience more convenient for you. We hope to have the opportunity to have you as our guest at another time!

We stayed at the Nittany Lion Inn because we were going to see a band in State College. The Inn offered a shuttle service to the venue. We were told to phone the hotel when we wanted to return. We phoned the hotel, gave our name and waited. When the shuttle arrived the mini-van picked up other hotel guests who arrived after us. We walked back to the hotel, a 20 minute hike. When we arrived back at the hotel we told the reception staff we had phoned for the shuttle but the driver had picked up other people. The reception staff said there was nothing they could do, even though we booked the shuttle. One member of staff said she had only just come on duty and it was nothing to do with her: no customer service. Another member of staff said there had previously been fights between guests to get on the shuttle. The Inn sets an expectation of great service and then let's it's customers down.

We had a meal in the bar at the Inn before going to see the band and a drink in the bar after having seen the band. On both occasions the service was very slow. Make sure you leave enough time.

This historical inn offers great service and comfortable rooms within walking distance of the shops and restaurants on and near College Ave. We went on a "non-event" weekend to visit our son who is a PSU student. The room rates are reasonable and there is no minimum night requirement on "non-event" weekends but if you stay here on football, graduation or Arts Fesival weekends, expect to pay at least double the regular rack rate. Most if all hotels in State College do this and it makes me crazy that they take advantage of consumers this way.

Thank you for your feedback! We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. We love being able to provide a great place for our PSU parents to visit their students!
I am also happy that we were able to provide you with a great rate during your stay. While our rates do vary throughout the year based on availability, we are often able to apply discounts such as AAA to your reservation. We also offer special promotions and packages throughout the year and rarely require a minimum length of stay for our events to best accommodate our guests' needs. If you ever require personal assistance, please email us at concierge@psu.edu and we are happy to work with you on any need that you may have.
We look forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you for allowing us to have you as our guest!

My son graduated in December and we wanted to finally experience the Nittany Lion Inn. We had high expectations and our weekend stay exceeded them.
Virtually every staff member actually seemed to enjoy working there. It was almost impossible for us to open the building front door ourselves --there was almost always someone there holding it open for us.
The building and grounds were decorated for Christmas and were beautiful. We had an extra large room with a separate couch and seating area.
The hotel shuttle made getting around campus a breeze, and when one of my chidlren came in by bus at 10:30 pm, because she called the shuttle, we did not have to immediately leave our friends to pick her up. When we went to a bar the shuttle dropped us off and picked us up shortly after we called.
We had the breakfast and the Sunday brunch buffets and felt they were reasonably priced and very good.
Whiskers was a clubby and reasonably priced place to have a drink, a burger or an after dinner cup of coffee with friends and family.
I would suggest the Inn for anyone who would enjoy a beautiful hotel with excellent service.

Great staff and location. The rooms were clean and roomy. The shuttle service was absolutely wonderful. The heater in our room was very loud, our only issue.

OK, the convenient location can't be beat. That aside, the rooms are dated with cheap pillows and linens with loud, ancient HVAC that will keep you up all night while going on and off. And if that doesn't wake you up, the chatty housekeepers outside your door first thing in the morning will. The gift shop closes before 7 so good luck if you forget a toiletry. If you park in the lot, you're forced to return to your car to install a permit tag upon check in, rain or shine. They don't have a frequent traveler reward program. Service in the lounge is slow and amateurish. And this is a pet peeve, but if you're going to overdecorate for the holidays why not acknowledge other celebrations besides Christmas. Starwood, I beg you to come to State College!

This inn is a must stay for someone new to the PSU world. It offers very quaint experiences with some 2011+ upgrades (like Wifi). The inn is located at the end of the campus, next to the world famous Nittany Lion Shrine.

PROS: Location, location, location - on campus, next to the Lion Shrine, beautiful grounds, easy to walk to anything on campus or the bus loops. In fact, the bus is literally right out the back door, and the White and Blue Loops are FREE OF CHARGE. The hotel is closest to the West Residence Halls, some education and engineering buildings, the "mall," and the Library. I think this is the prettiest part of campus. When driving, it's at a very popular intersection and very easy to find.

CONS: Book in advance! Rooms sell out super, super, super fast especially during football season and popular wedding months.

Room Tip: book in advance - as soon as you know your dates, book immediately.

We Are...so glad that you enjoyed your stay!

If you happen to visit us again during our snowy season, or at any time of the year, we also offer a complimentary shuttle service for all of our overnight guests throughout the local area. While we agree that the Loop is wonderful, we also don't want you to have to wait if you are pressed for time! Our Guest Services team is always happy to help.

We look forward to your next visit and thank you for your stay!
