“Great Camping...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2008

We just returned from a week at Hunting Island State park in South Carolina. We had a great time & the scenery is quite beautiful. The campsites are nice & large & can be quite private depending on which lot you get. There is a camp store with necessities & souvenirs. The bathrooms could use an upgrade. There are only 3 toilets & 2 showers per unit but all sites have water hook up so the lines were never too long. The staff was friendly & helpful. Quite a bit of wildlife. Very tame deer wandering around looking & raccoon & turtles. The beach was large & clean. Had some great waves for boogey-boarding. Lots of seashells but didn't see any sand dollars. A few must-haves: Bug spray(mosquitoes & no see um's), air conditioner & fans (HOT!), wagon (transporting things to beach) & beach umbrella(again, HOT!). Beaufort is a good 20 miles away so stock up before going. Good day trips were Savannah & Charleston. Definitely climb the lighthouse & go to nature center.
Overall a great expirence to see the South & camp amoung the Palm tree's.

“One of the best SC Beaches”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2008

As an original Carolina Girl who grew up in Hampton, SC, I can vouch for Hunting Island State Park. In all of my 52 years of beach going, Hunting Island ranks right up there with Edisto Beach, outside of Charleston. My family has been going to Hunting Island every year since my Mom and Dad were kids! If you like going to the beach to enjoy "the beach", then you will love Hunting Island. If you are looking for commercialization, you need to go somewhere else. The beach is clean and the water is perfect. There are some beach cabins there, but the majority of the ones on the ocean have been lost to the sea. There are some on the inlet side. This is a great "day trip" beach for those of us who lived close enough.

If you want a great place to stay for a week or longer, check out Edisto Beach, SC, outside of Charleston. We vacationed there almost every year while I was growing up. Again, not real commercial, but just the place if you are wanting to go and enjoy the ocean.

“Amazing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2008

Wow. We were impressed with Hunting Island State Park. The beach is amazing and the surf recedes incredibly far. You can walk forever along the shoreline. The kids had a blast searching for (and finding) shark's teeth. Just look for triangle shapes as the surfs goes out. They are abundant. There were shells and sand dollars to be gathered. We fished (but didn't have much luck). The camp site was clean. We had to wait on the prior camper to leave "our" spot before we could take it and he took his time and ending up leaving over an hour after he was supposed to be out of the spot. The park was quiet at night. Children and adults biked along the roads. We felt like we were away from everything. What a fabulous place. I can't wait to go back.

“a top 10 beach, but don't tell anyone...”

This barrier island is sparse, no casino, no putt-putt golf, but what a beautiful pristine beach. Walk for hours and unwind.
Here's a funny tale of a day at this beach

“Like no other”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2008

My husband and I were stationed in Beafort, SC during his recall. We went to Hunting Island every chance we got. The beach is not like the bustling Hilton Head beach. It is a nice secluded, quiet beach. Perfect for picnics and lounging. The scenery is beyond compare. Driving through the same wooded area where they filmed the Vietnam scenes for Forest Gump to get to the beach is also a plus. You never know what kind of wild life you'll run in to at the island. It is always an adventure!
