“Extremely helpful, friendly, and comfortable get-a-way!”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

We arrived a couple hours early before check in. There was no problem letting us go ahead and check in. The valet personnel was very friendly and made you feel welcome. Then as our four day stay continued we found the same welcoming manner from all the employees. The location of the Doubletree was perfect. Right in the middle of everything we enjoy about Charleston. We have stayed in Charleston many times, but this was our first time staying here. We will be returning to the Doubletree Charleston. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Great view from the second floor, but not too high up.

My family and I picked this Doubletree for our first time in Charleston for a 3 night stay and it was the perfect pick. We arrived much earlier than check in time and to start things off the service and friendliness from the valet guys was excellent. After we walked around the area a bit they called to let us know that our room was ready for an early check in. The room we had was clean and felt very comfortable. Our entire experience at the hotel was great, the service was awesome, and the location was perfect. We had to check out early at 6:30am on 3/14/12. The bellman/valet guy (I wish I'd remembered his name) helped us totally from the room to the loading of our car and the closing of our trunk. I highly recommend this hotel for a stay in historic Charleston.

Thank you very much for your review of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Charleston Historic District. We are thrilled you became part of our family during your stay with us! Our evening bellman on 3/14 was Derrick, who is absolutely wonderful, I will forward your comments to him and our Valet Staff. Thank you again for staying with us and we hope to see you again soon.

As a family of 5 (3 adults, 2 toddlers), it wasn't easy to find a reasonably priced (not to be confused with budget or cheap at $300/night + tax and $22 valet parking/day) room. We decided to give this hotel a try mainly due to the king suites promising to be suffient to accommodate our family (which includes "Gammie") via cribs and the sleeper sofa along with the (somewhat) separated living room from the bedroom.

A few reviewers mentioned the lack of space which got us concerned a bit. However, upon arrival it turned out to be a spacious suite with enough room in the bedroom to accommodate a king sized bed AND two cribs. Even if not, the living area could have easily accommodated the cribs. So, space wise we were very happy with our choice.

The valet parking ($22) is virtually mandatory and surrounding alternatives not necessarily any better. BoA parking next door is $15 and you'd have to repay upon leaving and returning. At this location (virtually right next to the market) it's a very convenient way to rid yourself of your car and enjoy the attractions in walking distance which includes the pier. (You'll notice that many people tip when picking up their cars.)

Aside from a (false) fire alarm at 4:00AM with a bit of an unorganized staff, the normal service is excellent. Since we had two toddlers with us, the extra attention of getting (unprompted) cookies when playing in the courtyard, or simply helping with getting us situated was a very welcome display of hospitality.

We certainly will consider coming back.

This hotel is located on Church Street, in the heart of the historic and tourist areas of Charleston. The city's market is about half a block away, and there are many good restaurants nearby. You could park your car and walk almost anywhere in the city. Also, the men working at the valet stand were incredibly efficient. We called down for our car each morning that we needed it, and it was always waiting for us when we arrived. If you have a question about anything to do with your stay, ask the valets.

The room was comfortable, but had a strange layout. Since there were three adults travelling, we opted for the bi-level suite. We all thought that the first floor was roomy. There was a sofabed and coffee table, and extra chair in the living room area. There was also a desk and comfortable work chair. Additionally, there was a sink and a big countertop, along with a mini-fridge. Behind the kitchen area was a giant mirror. Upstairs were two beds, which were VERY comfortable. The bathroom was terribly small. It was about the size of a standard cruise ship's bathroom. The sink was outside of the bathroom, which I did not like at all, and there was almost no counterspace. I even contemplated bringing my items downstairs to the larger countertop and sink. Also, the air conditioning controls were downstairs. There was a vent at the bottom of the stairs and the lower level of the room was downright cold. But, upstairs never seemed to cool off enough. Also, there wasn't a place to store luggage. There was a closet, but with the safe inside, there was no room on the floor for our bags. We ended up keeping them under the upstairs sink. If you are parents travelling with children and want some privacy, be advised that there are no doors separating anything in this room.

The staff (with the exception of the valet attendants) was friendly, but not very helpful. Part of the reason we booked this hotel is that we are all Hilton Honors members and other reviews said that there would be a complimentary breakfast for us. There wasn't. And, we were told that there would be no discount on the restaurant's breakfast prices. Call me crazy, but I refuse to pay $12 for a continental breakfast. We ended up going to a deli around the corner each morning for muffins or bagels. One day, we returned to our room to find that the beds had been made, but there was no soap, toilet paper, or cups. A trip to the main desk quickly rectified the situation, but I've stayed in cheap motels where they remembered to give me toilet paper each day. Lastly, ask for a room on an upper floor. We stayed mid-week on the second floor, so there wasn't generally a lot of street noise, but we were awakened by the trucks making deliveries (The staff told us there was nothing that could be done because they were private trucking companies. I've never heard of letting a truck idle on the street for 30 minutes. In fact, I thought that was illegal in most cities. In my opinion, if they were making deliveries to the hotel, the hotel had every right to ask them to turn off the engine), and a drunken idiot screaming after the bars closed on a Thursday night.

Overall, I think that this hotel would be worth a try again. I would just ask for a room on an upper floor and bring my own groceries.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor or a room facing away from the street.
