Owner description: Middleton Place is an 18th century rice plantation and National Historic Landmark comprising 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped Gardens, the Middleton Place House Museum and the Plantation Stableyards. The Gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of 17th century European design. Sculpted terraces, parterres, and reflection pools inhabited by swans are highlights of their intricate design. Rare camellias bloom in the winter, while vibrant azaleas blanket the hillside above the Mill Pond in the spring.

Pro: Beautiful gardens; Renovated pavilion for reception; Dinner for a big crowd was both timely and fresh.
Con: Indifferent management who leaves mid-event with predictable service drop-off and uncleared tables, etc; Wedding site not close to pavilion, yet management has just one crummy golf cart to transport principals causing ceremony to run late while guests sizzle in the heat far longer than necessary.
Conclusion: Unfortunately, better alternatives in Charleston.
Epilogue: No response post-wedding from management regarding areas of disappointment. Thus, this post as a word of caution.

Regarding this review of a wedding held at Middleton Place, it’s important at the outset to address the final comment with some facts perhaps not known by the reviewer. On the day after the wedding, the mother of the bride, a resident in the Charleston area, wrote a thoughtful and well-crafted email to the sales manager who assisted her planning of a “lovely and memorable evening.” She went on to write that most “in attendance had a fabulous experience” and heaped praise on the food with special “kudos to the kitchen.” All of these sentiments are echoed by the reviewer. With that said, the email also included comments related to the issues that the reviewer, a guest at the wedding, also articulated.

The reviewer writes that there was “no response post-wedding from management.” In fact, there was a response on the Wednesday following the wedding. Why not respond until Wednesday? The answer is simple enough: the email was received and read on Monday, a day when the Food & Beverage staff that worked the wedding (and other events) was enjoying some well-deserved time off. Upon the return of the Director of Food & Beverage on Tuesday, an investigation was launched to determine what had happened with the after-dinner service provided by the wait staff. It became clear over the course of the day that the information provided by the mother of the bride was accurate.

Specifically, an outdoor cocktail reception following the ceremony was held in an adjacent garden prior to the dinner in the Pavilion. Thereafter, some of the dinner’s wait staff was tasked with breaking down that cocktail reception before it became too dark to do so, which resulted in a short-staffing situation after the dinner service in the Pavilion. Management recognized that this process should have been coordinated more efficiently and, on Wednesday, the sales manager, in consultation with her own manager, composed an email that acknowledged the shortcomings of the Pavilion’s after-dinner service along with an expression of sincere apology and assurances that a similar situation will not happen again.

As for other comments on TripAdvisor by the wedding guest, several points are worth noting: Middleton Place was selected by the bride and groom as their dream wedding venue for their garden wedding and cocktail hour, as well as the full reception in the Pavilion. As locals, they were very much aware that they and their guests could be subjected to the hot weather conditions that often occur in June in the Low Country of Charleston. Similarly, they were aware that guests would be walking to and from the various locations for the ceremony and its aftermath. As for the use of a golf cart, one is provided by Middleton Place to accommodate guests who have mobility issues; though it is also available as needed to assist with late arrivals or as other circumstances may dictate.

Finally, TripAdvisor readers and the reviewer should know that Middleton Place encourages and values feedback and takes to heart suggestions that help improve the service provided to wedding parties, corporate event guests and the every-day visitors who make this National Historic Landmark a must-see stop on a visit to Charleston, SC.

Visited recently. Difficult decision to make for which of the three "Drayton Family Plantations" to visit. Not inexpensive so only wanted to do one of them, and each have something special they note about themselves. We chose Middleton b/c my wife loves the gardens, and they were great. Not sure if ultimately, this was the right choice or not, but it was a good couple of hours. Be prepared to be HOT if you go from June to August - also the mosquitoes can be tough as its right on the Ashley River. Worth a visit and should definitely do one of the three.

It’s a beautiful home but the grounds that make it! It’s a must do on a trip to Charleston! I like that they didn’t get rid of the slave quarters instead lovingly restoring them, although slavery isa terrible part of US history it’s important we learn and know about it to ensure we stop doing that to people. The tour guides are great and they host wonderful events!

I’ve been out to Middleton Place this May and June and each trip was sublime. My husband and I stayed at the Middleton Inn, ate at the restaurant, enjoyed the wine tasting and had the best “staycation” we’ve had in ages! We want to come back year around. We picked up a membership to Middleton Place, because for us there are so many reasons to come out there from Mt Pleasant.

Really take time to talk to the docents, eat at the restaurant (the food is so fresh much of it grown on Middleton place) the chef makes it so flavorful and wonderful! You can walk from Middleton Inn to the grounds to the restaurant and enjoy it at the different times of day. There’s so much to see and I highly recommend taking your time and enjoying it. Whether you love flowers, gardening, landscaping fit for kings, wildlife, ancient trees, history, or quiet it’s all there!
