We were really surprised after reading all the raving reviews of this hotel, because it didn’t live up to the hype and the whole stay has been disappointing. The staff were just OK, nothing really to write home about and the hotel itself is dated and in much need of remodeling. We stayed in a junior suite and it was not very nice, so I can’t imagine how bad deluxe rooms are. One of the most surprising things about the bathroom is that there was no fan (each time you shower expect it to fog up - see my picture of the corroded lighting fixture) and also poor/awkward design and placement of light switch and toilet paper holder (probably not a big deal to some but it will tell you how outdated the hotel is). Also, as an FYI, the hotel itself is a replica of the original one, built in the 1970s, because the original building didn’t survive termites. Nobody also knows why on the hotel’s website it mentions a ghost that allegedly some have seen - the staff will tell you there’s no ghost and the hotel is not haunted... it’s just a corporate marketing ploy. My suggestion would be up spend a little more and stay at a better hotel (we will be staying at the Belmond Charleston next time - much better location and hotel).

Thank you for choosing our hotel. I am disappointed to learn of your visit. It does not resemble a typical Mills House Wyndham Grand experience. Please note that it is not our practice to deceive our guests. We do not promote nor do we advertise that The Mills House is haunted but we do recognize the appreciation by many, for the history and mystic that adds to the charm that is Charleston. Your feedback is very important to us.Please accept my apology for your inconveniences.

Sincerely,
Cree Stubbs

Perfect location to the historical district and far enough from the louder area of upper King street bars. Very quick walk to some highly recommended restaurants.

It was a beautiful property and the staff was welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. They made our stay the best. Thank you so much Clayton, Jeff, Alaya, and the other staff members that we met. The location was great, we could walk to anywhere we needed to go

Stayed at the Mills House Wyndham Friday thru Monday for a getaway weekend for my wife and I. She chose the location of Charleston for a birthday getaway for me, and chose the Mills as well. Glad she did. The hotel itself is situated in the perfect location in Charleston for those looking to explore the French Quarter, the waterfront area, King Street, East Bay Street, and of course Meeting Street. All roads seemed to lead us back to the hotel every night. It is perfectly situated.

Being from the northeast, the gentile and polite hospitality of the South is so refreshing. The staff immediately welcomed us and engaged us in easy conversation. I can be that guy on the plane that doesn’t want to make pointless chit-chat, but these people are so friendly and likable, you get pulled in.

The room was the perfect size, but the bathroom was a bit small. The only nit was the bathroom door was a slider, and didn’t really seat properly. So we’d be doing our bathroom “business” and the door would slowly slide open. Must have been one of those Charleston ghosts we kept hearing about. We finally figured out how to foil their fun and get it to balance just right, but it it never felt very private. Not a huge deal for us. After 23 years, not a lot is left to discover.

The hotel was an historic, old building, but elegantly and meticulously maintained and updated. The bed was very soft. And although I like it more firm, typically, I slept like a baby. Our room faced the front, on the third floor, and even during a very busy Easter/school vacation time, was incredibly quiet and peaceful. Something about the area, really, that is so relaxing and calming. We didn’t want to leave. But the hotel is extremely relaxing and soundproof.

And a shout out to the unsung heroes - the housecleaning staff. Kept the room tip-top, and even left us a couple of bottles of water each day. After walking the city for miles each day, that was something we looked forward to every time we came back. Even knocked on the door one evening to see if we needed any more. So for anyone who doesn’t leave a tip on their pillow each day, how ‘bout it? These folks made our stay very comfortable, and were very professional and pleasant as well.

Had some late night drinks in their lounge, the Barbados room, with some apps. Nice ambience, friendly staff. The entire staff was the best. Caught a car to the airport with some help from the young guy at the transportation stand. Scheduled it the day before. As he was grabbing our bags from storage on the last day he read our mind and again asked if we wanted waters for the ride to the airport. Again, perfect timing. My wife and I kept saying what a great place to visit with another couple, and the Mills will absolutely be our spot again. Couldn’t recommend it more.
