Description: Evoking memories of the small-town grocery, executive chef and owner Kevin Johnson has created a gathering place of warmth and familiarity, with a menu based on seasonal ingredients available from local and regional farmers and fishermen he knows and has worked with for many years. The Grocery’s kitchen is stocked with house-made charcuterie and fresh, local fish and seafood, and the restaurant accommodates an in-house canning program to preserve fresh produce for the menu. An extensive cocktail and wine list are available as is craft beer on tap, and a wood-burning oven heightens the cordial atmosphere in the former furniture warehouse.

We had dinner here on a Friday night and sat at the bar since we didn’t have reservations. They were really busy but we enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The food was fantastic. We had fried pimento cheese, beets, the seafood Pilau and churros for dessert. I highly recommend making reservations especially on a weekend.

Not many restaurants can, or are willing to, handle a family party of 30 people with such precision. We reserved the private room off the main dining room and it was ready when we arrived. The wait staff were attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Our fixed menu (see photo) was priced at $50 p/person. Absolutely worth every penny! I had the charred broccoli, beef short rib, and banana pudding. All were excellent...the banana pudding is served in a jar with toasted marshmallow topping; the pudding was the creamiest I’ve ever had. The beef was “fork” tender and full of flavor. The charred broccoli was, again, full of flavor served with a dressing that delivered a bit of a tang.
Cocktails were expertly mixed by a professional bartender and quite tasty (lemon drop martini). The Grocery is a “bit” out of downtown, but don’t let that stop you from experiencing this gem!!! Parking is prime in Charleston and The Grocery offers free parking in a lot adjacent to the restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely return. Enjoy!!

It's a lively place with a fine bartender who makes a good martini and a good old fashioned (we're on the older side). We had shad roe and Nantucket scallops to start both of which were very good. For mains, we had Triggerfish, which was compromised because one of us doesn't like the beets accompaniment, and a pork chop which was good but not great -- a little more fatty than it should have been. I'd try the triggerfish again with the sides as advertised; I wouldn't have the pork chop again. Cauliflower as a side was really good. Tables were comfortably spaced. The space is airy and fresh-feeling, We enjoyed watching the crowd and would definitely come back.

We only stopped in for a drink and a snack but were really impressed with the few items we sampled. It was a quiet Sunday night and we sat at the bar. Although he didn’t mention it, we were served by the manager. My husband enjoyed a cocktail and commented on how good the olives were in his drink, such a small think but it really enhanced his enjoyment of his drink. We shared the Roman Style Cauliflower and it was hands down the best Cauliflower dish we have ever had. (Yes, that’s a soft boiled egg on top and yes...it works!) The bold mix of flavors and textures was so unique! I wasn’t sure about the anchovy breadcrumbs so they used regular breadcrumbs instead which I thought was so accommodating of them. It was a wonderful experience and if I lived in Charleston I’d be back to try all the other dishes too.

I ate here 3 nights ago with some friends. After our server asked us 3 times if we were ready to order within 10 minutes of being seated, we politely told her we would like to chat a few minutes and would let her know when we were ready. We didn't know she would disappear and not return for 20 minutes. When we were finally able to catch her, she was very abrupt for the rest of our meal and she never told us about any of the specials for the night. It was obvious she did not want to be there, nor did she want us to be there. Also, the "Lump" Crab and Tagliatelle Pasta was not "lump" crab meat. It was "flakes" of crab meat, at best.
