“Great Location - Perfect for visiting USC”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

The staff was warm and welcoming. Our room showed some wear that is expected in a busy hotel, but overall a quality product. We did not eat in the dining room because there are too many non-hotel restaurants nearby.

My wife and I wanted to have a nice evening out on the town, but the hotel was not a highlight. During our stay, the name and reputation of Marriott were not upheld. As we were heading to the elevator after checking in, the cleaning staff cut in front of us and did not even acknowledge us, definitely not what I would call good customer service. While the room was nice and clean, the water pressure of the hotel was lacking, I would have been better off using a water bottle to shave. As part of our hotel package, we were supposed to get a free breakfast in the hotel restaurant and free parking, but we were not given the breakfast and parking was free for all. While I have stayed in worse places in my life, I do not anticipate ever staying in this hotel again.

Thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us last week. I apologize for the way our staff reacted to your arrival and have spoken with the Housekeeper to ensure that all our guests are given the VIP treatment they expect when staying here. I will also address the breakfast coupon issue with the Front Desk. I hope if your travels bring you back to Columbia, you will allow us to have a second chance to show our true guest service colors. Please contact directly if your plans call for a trip to Columbia again. Again, my apologies as we take great pride in our service to our valued guests! Best Regards

Comfortable hotel room, however the bathrooms very small. Located next to USC and by the State Buildings. Parking, if you have a pick-up or very large SUV can be a problem. The restaurant is OK - nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: Ask for the largest rooms possible.

This Courtyard is a bit more weathered than most. Front desk staff was excellent. I stayed in the SpringHill Suites Columbia the night prior and that was very good. Both are Marriott properties close to USC. This Courtyard had a great breakfast buffet which was not included with the room price. I couldn't get a room in either hotel for two nights, thats why I split hotels. In the future I will stay at the SpringHill Suites rather than this Courtyard.

Parking in the garage is a little tricky but otherwise the check in experience was great. The lobby is inviting and the staff were super friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is not in the heart of the campus of USC but within walking distance. One word of warning, the train tracks are nearby and the conductors are not shy about blowing the whistle.

I stayed in this Courtyard for about four nights. It was in a good location with nice clean rooms. The entire staff was very nice and much more outgoing than most hotels I have stayed in. Nice quiet rooms with ample space Good hotel for the price. Only issue is that the parking is a little funky. I would stay here again.

After driving for ten hours on our way to the coast, we decided on this downtown hotel since we wanted an environment that allowed us to take a long walk. We were not disappointed! Downtown Columbia is very charming, made more so by USC's campus and the striking state capitol building - a great place for walking!

The hotel's exterior is fairly utilitarian in appearance but the interior is where the details shine through. Our parking was covered and a few steps from the lobby entrance (which came in handy the next morning when packing up during the rain). After dumping our bags in our room, we took advantage of the lobby bar for a night cap. As luck would have it, we got there a half hour before closing and our bartender didn't want to save the opened bottle of wine and gave us two generous glasses each for the price of one. After the long drive, that was very much appreciated and we tipped him accordingly.

Our room was spacious and clean with two very comfortable queens. Equally important, it was extremely quiet (i.e., soundproof)! This was greatly appreciated since the hotel was host that weekend to at least a hundred contestants and their parents for some major dance competition somewhere in town. Between the bed, wine and the quiet, we slept like logs.

Our breakfast was wonderfull. In addition to the fairly broad assortment of pastries, cereals, juices, yogarts and meat and egg steam table item, we elected for our chef to provide us with the "eggs any style" option - all included in the cost of our room. Our breakfast would have set us back a good $10 a piece for the three of us if we would have eaten out, so not a bad deal.

I would definitely recommend this hotel, especially if you want some in-town ambiance that you don't often get in a more convenient hotel just off the freeway ramp.

Room Tip: Get a room on the upper floor with a view of the state capitol and/or USC's campus.
