“It's on the beach.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2011

The Monarch is one of the older stays on the Hilton Head Island. However, it has not lost its shine. Located in Sea Pines Plantation provides added security. The Monarch's beach front location is a dream. Located near are every form of indulgence one could wish. It is easy to see the staff takes pride in their facility. Walk, bike, fish, swim, boat, eat, drink and be merry.

Room Tip: Request a high room facing the Atlantic Ocean. The trees have grown over the years.

A few girlfriends and I stayed here for the weekend and had a great time. Everything was perfect, from the ease of check-in to the very clean room and the beautiful grounds. It was a great location, we were able to walk on the beach and also ride our bikes to Coligny Plaza and the Salty Dog with out any issues.

Although this property is older than the other Marriotts on the island, to me it is much more charming. Nestled in the Sea Pines and right on the beach, this villa provides a true escape from the churning reality of everyday living. The rooms are absolutely immaculate! Beds are comfortable, kitchens are new and sparkling and the surroundings are lush. I would return in a heartbeat!

We had a great time at the Monarch. The villa we stayed in was very clean and comfortably layed out and furnished. This resort was very family friendly and we enjoyed participating in the pool activities with our children. The grounds are beautiful and we have already recommended this resort to our friends and family. We hope to return next summer!

One of the two Marriott Hilton Head properties right on the beach. It is a little older and, although updated to some degree, still a bit dated in decor. This did not bother us a bit. The beds are comfortable and pillows and linens are great. We had a ground floor unit in Azalea, could walk right out to pool and beach. It is a smaller unit that at Barony Beach where we have stayed previously and, personally, I think it would be crowded with six people, at least 6 adults. It is in Sea Pines and is such an accessible location. We love to bike and all the trails are so much fun to explore. Pools and hot tubs are great, fitness center is small but fine with decent equipment. There are daily activities for kids and families. Highly recommend it!

The Monarch is one of the older properties in Sea Pines, but it has been renovated. The suites are smaller than you would find in newer properties, but the location is prime. We have come here two years in a row. Sorry to have to leave and go home.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor and the main building

Our family of 4 (2 adults & 2 kids; 6 & 3) just returned from a week at the Monarch. This is going to be long, but I want to be sure to include some info about the area. Check in and check out went quite smoothly until we got to our room. We exchanged thru Interval and own an a 2 bedroom ocean front, which we should be accommodated for but since the Monarch only has 17 ocean front rooms with a high owner return rate, we could not be accommodated. They did offer to put us on a higher floor but further away from the pool. We declined. We were in the Magnolia building, rm 3523 (2nd floor). The room was somewhat clean but disheveled. It looked as if it was cleaned in a hurry with lampshades and chairs cockeyed. The grossest thing was when I reached into the cabinet for a juice glass and found lipstick on not 1 but 2 glasses!! Other issues with this unit (which hopefully have been addressed as we did alert the Director of Ops): hot tub jets did not work (they are removing all the tubs anyway, but would have been nice to know), the ice maker in the fridge took 3 days to make more than 12 cubes of ice, the lid on the coffee pot was broken so I spilled hot coffee all over myself and the dishwasher was in desperate need of help as it left behind grit on almost everything no matter how well we rinsed off.

The 2 bedroom unit is a nice size and we had plenty of room for us as well as a few relatives who came to visit. The balcony was quite spacious, a plus for us since we do spend a lot of time out there once the kids go to sleep. Our view was of the lagoon, pool and gazebo with a small slice of ocean. I know some people have complained about the gross, green swampy water, (it is green), but it's really not swampy. They have paths and benches and even a swing around the lagoon. It is also stocked with fish which the kids can feed; my 2 little ones really enjoyed it! I know also there is the fear of being attacked by mosquito's (and I usually get eaten alive); that being said, only the 1st night did I have an issue. I also bought bug spray with me as well as a candle for the balcony. After the 1st night, the bugs were not an issue.

The pool area: there are 2 pools and one kiddie pool. ***This Marriott does not have a bar or restaurant around the pool area.*** They have a very small marketplace with limited items in the lobby. There is a beach bar/restaurant (Surfside-it's part of Sea Pines) next door which is open until 9:30. They have live music from 5:30-9:30 daily. They have sit down eating as well as serve yourself. They are on the pricey side and food is good-not great. The grills onsite at the Monarch are well maintained. They even have a few sinks around the BBQ's as well. Outside of the lobby there are several rocking chairs, a pool table and ping pong table set up. There also is shuffleboard and a fire pit. We did find many people placing personal items on chairs at the pool and then going to the beach for several hours which made it difficult at times to secure chairs together. They did have activities daily, similar to other vacation clubs: face painting, crafts, kids night out, mimosa breakfast, wine tasting, cook-out's, a dj at the pool one day, ect.

Getting around: the Monarch is located in Sea Pines. You have to pay $5 the 1st day and then you get a pass for the week. Sea Pines is home to Harbor Town and South Beach Marina (The Salty Dog). Sea Pines runs a 'trolley' which is supposed to make rounds every 20 minutes which will take you to Harbor Town, The Shops at Sea Pines and South Beach Marina (all 3 places have shopping and eating). The trolley is free and depending on the time of year, runs until 10 or midnight. It picks up at the beach parking lot entrance next door to the Monarch. Anything else you need a bike or car. The closest supermarket is Bi-Lo on Pope Ave (about 8 min by car). Do yourself a favor, sign up for the savings card, it's worth the few extra minutes. Mine still worked from my last trip down over 10 years ago! Colginy Circle is in the same area as Bi-Lo, so it's also about an 8 min ride. In Colginy you will find Piggly Wiggly, Steamers, The Frosty Frog and a host of other eateries and shopping. We ate at Wild Wing Cafe ( a must for wing affeciandos, just order something else besides buffalo wings). Don't like wings? They have plenty of other items to choose from. We also ate at Scott's in Shelter Cove; nothing to write home about and pricey. We did the Crazy Crab in Harbor Town, pricey also, but huge portions, the food was good and the kids loved it. The best meal was at Robert Irivine's eat! I had read mixed reviews, but we gave it a try on our last night in HHI. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes; especially if you consider yourself a foodie. And don't be fooled...are they the most kid friendly place on the Island, no; but are children welcome? Yes! Just be smart, if your kids are generally well behaved when you're out to eat, they will be fine in places like eat! If not, stick to places like the Crazy Crab and The Old Oyster Factory.

The most important item: buy a bag of ice before you check in; especially if you like to get into the Island groove with a frozen drink while unpacking!:)
