“Mariners Walk - What A Great Place To Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2009

My family and I stayed at Wild Dunes, Mariners Walk, unit 10E the week of August 23 - 30, 2009 and really had a great time - we have vacationed at Mariners Walk almost every year during the last 10 years. This unit is very nicely decorated, we paid extra for a premium furnished unit. The beach is just a 3-4 minute walk away, in the last two years, Wild Dunes has restored the sand and it is now a really nice beach. Maid service during mid-week, it was very clean when we arrived. I would recommend that you book with Wild Dunes. Pool is very nice and only used by other Mariner's Walk guests, shower provided to wash off sand before entering pool when comming from the beach. The grounds and landscaping is the only thing that needs just a little work. About a 45 minute drive to downtown Charleston, lots to do, many nice resturants, shopping, tours via buggy ride, harbor cruise, aquarium, and a lot more to see and do. This is a great place for both families with little children and teenagers.

Overall, we had a wonderful time and the resort is excellent. There is plenty of beach without erosion from Mariner's Walk, south. Tennis courts, pools, bike rentals were all good. We were booked at Seascape Villas, which is one of the buildings suffering severe erosion. It and several nearby building foundations are literally in the surf during every high tide. The villa we saw there was not great, only worth $800/wk, not $2000. After complaining at check-in, they readily upgraded us to Mariner's Walk which was much nicer and at no extra charge. Not sure this could occur during high summer season. The condo was gorgeous with great views. Would stay there again.

North of Mariner's Walk, all week we watched flat bed semi's drive back & forth past us on the beach delivering sandbags to the eroding buildings and dunes. People with kids might be nervous about this and this meant people staying at those places couldn't use the beach at low tide. The trucks are loud, the bags are ugly and litter the beach as they erode away. Hard to feel carefree with all of that.

Wild Dunes does provide a map and a list of buildings suffering erosion on their website - but the map is clearly out of date as of the week of Sept 10th. The edge of the 18th hole is also eroding & turf washes up all over the beach..

The place is great overall - just don't stay north of Mariners Walk or you may be sorely disappointed.

  • Liked — Beach access & nice condo
  • Disliked — Natural surroundings eradicated for overdone landscaping
