I have taken several of my U.S. and World History groups to the Alex Haley Museum. This is a really good lesson on slavery, Alex Haley and his roots in where he goes all the way back to Africa during the slave trade. This museum is tucked away in Henning, TN. It is worth the time, and money to go through to see slaves, slave trade, and things about Alex Haley first hand.

This was a great learning experience. Something every parent should take their children to see. It was a step back in our history. How encouraging it was to hear that Alex Haley parents were educated black people and that his grandfather was a business owner. I could feel the life and love in this home. I was sorry to hear that the people who financially benefited from Mr Haley novel have contributed very little to keep this museum going on for our children.

The museum director is a fabulous tour guide. He brought to life the wonderful aspects of life in the early 20th century Henning, TN. He provided us with song and story that made this visit so enjoyable. This is a great place to take the family to appreciate how easy life is now for the modern American family, and how challenging life was for African Americans living in the early 1900s. This visit helped me appreciate what Alex Haley experienced. I'm glad the museum exists to continue telling the story of Roots.

Glad I had an opportunity to hear the additional history of Alex Haley along touring his grandparents house, followed by walking through the museum.

The Alex Haley House Museum has is located in Henning, Tennessee in a quiet residential neighborhood. Park in the back by the Museum. When we were there the doors were locked but we rattled them and a friendly staff member let us in. You see a short movie about Alex Haley and the movie Roots then are free to wander around the small but well done museum. The house tour is guided by a staff member who, when we visited, was a nice lady who really knew her material about the Haley and Palmer families. Alex Haley is buried in the front yard. Be sure to also visit Bethlehem Cemetery nearby where Haley's family is buried.
