Location, location, location. The views from the hotel are stunning, and I can’t imagine would be easily bettered. It’s a short walk down a steep slope to the huge, beautiful beach with its long rolling waves suitable for the learner surfer.
It feels as if the hotel has lost a lot of its original features in harder times when the Deco look was unfashionable. It is however trying hard to recreate the look, and feel, and with some success.
The hotel has great facilities and a highly rated restaurant. There is also a cool beach bar which serves a good selection of simpler food and snacks.
I would say though the hotel is quite isolated, with a long walk required to other locations and facilities.

Room tip: The back wing of the hotel is a little shabby, but the room rate compared to the front section reflects this.

This visit was our 5th which says it all!!. I read some of the other reviews and to be honest I don't recognise the hotel they refer to. But everyone has different expectations I guess. We always stay in room 311 which is perfect for us, excellent bathroom and a comfortable bed which everything we need to enjoy our stay. Firstly the breakfast is buffet style and it difficult to imagine anything they you might want that's not available. As regards dinner I was delighted that they have added different choices every evening to the set dinner menu so if your staying for 4/5 nights or longer you don't have to repeat meals unless you want to. Its also very nice to see some the same staff still there visit after visit. The spa is in its infancy and once the leisure area is completed it will be a great addition to the hotel. Once again we are already planning our next visit

Room tip: Sea View a must as on of the best views in Devon

Just returned from 5 night stay and as always had a fabulous time. The staff from the manager to the cleaning staff are always very polite and welcoming. We always have a sea view room and have never had any complaints about cleanliness. Love the fact the restaurant does a standard menu as well as a different one that changes daily and u can pick from either when on a dinner B&B rate.
3 little observations... The Spa which is great needs a spin dryer in the changing rooms as drying swim wear in the rooms is not easy.
The Brend chain should have a loyalty card system ..
The marvellous fish and chips on the standard menu should have proper chips not skinny fries.

Room tip: Sea view is a must

The last time we stayed at this hotel was 20 years ago when we came with family. Since then we have stayed in many 4 and 5 star hotels around the world. We wanted to make a nostalgic trip back to this hotel, but were quite concerned as there were some negative reviews posted on trip advisor. However, we decided to risk it. We booked a deluxe sea view room, dinner, bed and breakfast, the room was exactly as pictured on the hotel website (225), very nice with outstanding view, bed comfortable, clean, complimentary mini bar with water, soft drinks, red and white wine, which were replenished, a little complimentary box of chocolates on arrival. Breakfast fine, the dinner menu didn't change much, but we found something on there each night that suited us and was of a good standard (we were staying for 4 nights). The public rooms were lovely with comfy sofas. We found all the hotel staff we came in contact with were very pleasant and helpful. My overall opinion is that this is a lovely hotel in a great location. I cannot comment on what other rooms are like, but we had a lovely stay.

Room tip: Recommend the deluxe sea view room

Our family booked a sea view room for a 70th birthday treat. We decided to go 2 days beforehand.
-Do not book a 'cozy room' like we did! No seaview-this we expected. Small room (approx 11ft x 15ft). But 2xkitchen fans 8ft from window, grubby skirting boards, small TV (24” max) and a mattress you could feel the coils through...gave us a sleepless first night. I've had much better nights in Travelodges at a fraction of £206 B&B. This room is only suitable for a coach driver or a cheap single room.
-After a stressful time complaining, the Manager moved us to a family suite.Thank you.
-The pool is good, the new spa is fine but not specially large and guests are 'rationed ' to one and a half hours a day – which did not seem very 4*.
-The unexciting Dinner menu (again not 4*) did not change for three days, so we decided against the celebratory meal, it was also our wedding anniversary. £5 supplements for potatoes/veg were a turn off when the hotel is already expensive. There were even supplements for some breakfasts!
-Nothing is checked in this hotel, no phone or robes in our first room. Crockery stained, no Dinner menu on display when we arrived. We had to ask, ask all the time, it felt as if we were running the hotel ourselves! Exhausting.
-What part of customer service and great guest experience does Saunton Sands hotel not understand? This hotel could be superb.
-It’s the little touches that distinguish a 4* hotel: A nice welcome-staff were polite but not warm. Choice of teas (green, Earl Grey etc) not available in the room, pretty standard these days even in a B&B. Linen serviettes at breakfast would match the 4* rating. Nice toiletries but what is wrong with a West Country make. Cider in beach bar was from Suffolk!
-Breakfast was interesting – once upgraded to family suite, we were directed to a different area of the Dining Room! Coincidence or ..???
- Found Prosecco in the room - Hurray! the hotel has woken up to guest experience, but no... our family paid £29 for this privilege and the full cost of another £260 was shown on our bill. Not the most sensitive thing to do.
- And we never did experience our sea view night - my birthday treat (we were too exhausted to move rooms a third time).
-Now we have the difficult task of explaining to our family that their hard-earned cash was not put to 4* use.
-Not sure who the people are who rave about this, they have probably never stayed in a well-functioning 4* hotel, or are blinded by the stunning view.
-And in case you wonder, I was raised in Hotels since the age of 8yrs, worked in a 5* hotel for 10 years. As a Tour Guide, I stay in Travelodges up to 4* hotels in Europe and Asia.
I would love to stay at this hotel again but not until its taken by the scruff of its neck and severely shaken until Four Star standards are actually achieved.

Dear Mrs Coles,
Following your recent review, I was sorry to read that you had placed such a negative review.
As stated you booked a cosy room and contacted reception after your first evening with us.
Your initial complaint was that the room was very small and that the mattress had springs popping through it and was filthy dirty.
On reporting these issues I immediately went to investigate your concerns, with the head housekeeper. The mattress was in excellent condition and no signs of damage. I returned to the room with you and your husband so you could show me directly your complaints to which you believed that the mattress had been changed as no visible marks were evident and no damaged springs could be identified.
At this stage your husband was adamant that you should not be charged for the night even though no evidence of your complaint could be justified.
However, as requested I sourced alternative accommodation and upgraded you to a Living Suite. I did not charge for your first evening even though the accommodation was as booked.
Our smallest televisions are 32 inch so 24 inch is totally not true.
The dinner menu has a selection of 7 starters, 10 main courses and 8 desserts, 7 of which change daily so I don’t agree that the menu is unexciting.
Our cosy rooms do not have robes as standard however, if these are requested we do provide.
The dinner menu is advertised daily next to the lift and this is available once the menu has been finalised and written, usually available from 3pm onwards.
You decided not to move once I had upgraded you free of charge to your Living Suite which was purely your decision.
All rooms have a selection of teas, coffee and hot chocolate. I would surmise that you simply did not see them.
Yes we do sell cider and yes it’s from Suffolk which is purely down to the fact that is what the brewery is currently offering as a draught cider. It would be great to have a Somerset cider however we currently do not.
