This is an adventure hostel, which means it has activities on offer and caters to prebooked parties. However, it still accepts plenty of individual travellers, and the youth party that were there while my friend and I stayed were kept so busy we barely noticed them. They stayed on a separate floor (not sure if this is always the case) and received catered meals rather than using the kitchen. We too could have bought three meals a day, but preferred to cook for ourselves.

Which brings me to the kitchen. This was a little small - which may be because many people who stay buy hot meals from the catering kitchen. There were two fridges, one of which smelled evil and so wasn't being used much. There was limited storage space for your other goods and the kitchen became very hot at times. The kitchen didn't feel crowded, but if more people were self catering I can see that there could be a problem. The utensils were all fine, but I would suggest bringing your own sharp knife and possibly a can opener (although I am sure they will replace the missing one). Recycling was promoted with space to leave your cans, plastic bottles and glass.

There is a small shop at reception, which sold some basics, but if you were self catering it would be better to come prepared. Reception staff were business-like and pleasant.

There were two TV lounges, which also had games (some of which need refreshing or throwing away). There were maybe about 6 shower cubicles on our floor. Clean with hot water. The toilets were reasonably clean, but could have done with some more hooks in the main sink area. Also there was one shower in the toilets which was broken and constantly running water - hopefully this will be fixed.

My friend and I booked a private room, which turned out to be a 6 bed dorm. The room was a reasonable size and had 4 metal lockers. The bunks were metal and creaky. Unfortunately I picked the worst mattress of the room (extremely doingy), but I was able to swap the next night onto another bunk, which was perfectly comfy. The carpet was old and worn and looked a bit furry (probably to do with industrial strength vacuum cleaning). The walls were thick and although the room overlooked the front courtyard seating area, noise levels were pretty low (it was quite rainy while we were there, so I suppose it's possible it could be more noisy in nicer weather with people sitting out). Staying in this room with 5 other people could be noisy due to the metallic creakyness of the beds and the metal lockers.

My friend and I used the hostel as a base to visit the local area and North Cornwall. The moors were close by, Okehampton castle was pretty and places like the Eden Project not too far by car.

Basically, it's nothing fancy, but it's nice enough and I'd go there again as a base for the area.
