Had an absolutely brilliant Sunday Lunch ! Not been here before but got the recommendation from Trip Advisor and happy to pass it on - help yourself to starter and dessert and the roast is a carvery. Definitely good value for money in nice surroundings.....

My partner and I called in to the hotel for a coffee after a walk on the moors. I asked for a coffee at reception and was told to go to another bar to order- I went to the bar to be met by the same lady who took my order which included some biscuits-I was then left at the bar whilst the lady dissapeared to find some biscuits- after 5 minutes she came back to inform the bar staff there were no biscuits and walked off. The bar staff continued serving other people so after another 5 minutes I asked if I could have my coffee? I also asked for some cake to accommpany the coffee and was told they had none- a guy arrived at the bar and ordered a cream tea which they accepted- I asked if i could have a scone and was told I could if ordering cream tea! When asked where sitting I informed barman that we were on the bench on the lawn- then told they couldn't bring it out there due to health and safety as meant walking on grass- pathetic service and in desparation paid for 2 coffees and took them to bench myself- wasn't worth the hassle as poor quality coffee, dreadful service and will never visit again- far better venues in the area such as the Prince Hall hotel which served home made biscuits with great coffee and they managed to bring it out onto the lawn!,

Stayed here for one night and because it was our anniversary they upgraded us free of charge to the honeymoon room. Beautiful four poster bed, lovely woodland view and an amazing whirlpool bath. Very lovely indeed. One fault, it hadn't been cleaned very well from the previous occupants. Dirty cups on the windowsill.

The cost of our stay included dinner and breakfast as well. We dressed up for dinner as we had previously popped our head in and it seemed like the correct thing to do. We were a little dissapointed to see Mr and Mrs Smith wearing work clothes and jeans. Maybe a smart jacket rule should apply for the evenings??

The meal was faultless and we ended up being the last ones dining chatting to the staff. We were served by a young chap who's name i never got. His customer service skills were faultless. He could not do enough for everyone dining and obviously enjoyed and took great pride in his job. He even went into the chef and wrote down the recipe for our lamb noisettes and potatoes that we had eaten.

The hotel is set in a beautiful place and has the most wonderful views over the moors.

Inside the hotel is lovely and we spent some of our day happily sat in front of the fire in a his and hers leather chair reading the papers. Service was a bit slow but we were not in a rush at all.

All in all a wonderful stay and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a romantic break. Cannot wait to visit again.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the honeymoon suite!!!

The hotel was attractive from the outside with a welcoming appearance and a hint of how cosy it could be within. Inside those expectations were not disappointed. The public areas were warm and cosy with bags of character (wood panelling, open fires, leather sofas, etc).
Our room was spotlessly clean and well presented
The staff were attentive. smartly dressed and polite at all times and nothing appeared to be too much trouble for them.
The restaurant had fresh flowers on each table each day, which added to the superb service we experienced. The variety and quality of the meals served was first class. My only comment being that a little background music would have been appreciated.
Would we visit again?
Yes

Stayed here for one night after a recommendation. This is a lovely hotel of character, great for a stay on Dartmoor. Very cosy lounge with open fires. Good range of beer and wine. Huge Devon Cream tea - you will have to be very hungry to eat one all to your self. Young and helpful staff.

Room fine, newly re furbished barthroom. Dogs allowed in some rooms at no extra cost. Food very good. All in all, we hope to stay there again.

Room Tip: If you don't have a dog and there is space, you may be offered a free upgrade.

We stayed here when we were guests at a wedding. The hotel itself is quite characterful, with open fires blazing and plenty of pictures of the locality. The staff were pretty much faultless despite alot of them being quite young, they were very professional and courteous. So no problem there.
My main gripe is with the room we had. We were charged £160 for the night and the room just didn't justify it. I like a shower in the morning and i just couldn't believe there wasn't one. Sure there was a bath that made bubbles but no shower? seriously!
So my score is probably a little harsh. If the room had a shower i would give it 4 stars no problem but with no shower - £160 a night is very steep.

my daughter booked High Tea for us to celebrate Mothers Day we expected china tea cups linen napkins, flowers in the dinning room and a welcoming atmosphere. We received table not fully laid, plain white cups and plates, sugar bowel. No napkins, teaspoons, knives or table decoration of any kind. When asked we were given black paper napkins, very plain sandwiches, earl grey tea but no lemon.A wonderful piano in the room not being used, no flowers decorating the room, the only warm feel came from the open fire. It felt as though we were in a conference room. No one asked if we wanted more tea, we had to go and find a member of staff who then bought the tea no problem. We are not people who complain often but we have had much better experiences in tea shops in Totnes and Tavistock, after looking forward to a special experience we were left feeling very disappointed
