An overnight stay at the Arundell Arms, Lifton, is something my husband and I would thoroughly recommend. The staff were very friendly, our room spacious and comfortable, and we left the dinner table replete. We frequently travel further down the south west peninsula into Cornwall and will make a point of dropping into the Arundell Arms again.

We enjoyed our short stay, the room comfortable, the meal excellent (good wine list) and the staff friendly and helpful. Hope to return in the autumn with a salmon rod. Visit the parish church, St Mary the Virgin.

We have just returned from a short 2 night stay at this charming country/fishing hotel on the Devon/Cornwall boarder. We have stayed here on many previous occasions for short family celebrations and are always made warmly welcome. This is the first time we have stayed since Adam, Anne Voss-Bark's son took over running of the hotel. I am pleased to say that that we enjoyed our stay as much as ever. The dinner is superb with a good choice of starter and main course dishes. Breakfast is excellent ranging from kippers, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon to a full Devon with everything in between. Most of the food is sourced locally. I am a fisherman but have not had a sporting break here. The fishing is very extensive and you couldn't find 2 nicer more friendly guides/gillies than David and Tim.
It was good to see Adam coming round in the evening chatting with the guests, something his mother always did. It is also worth mentioning that this is a very dog friendly hotel. Our dog was allowed anywhere but the dining room. I would not hesitate (and have done so many times) in recommending this hotel for a short break as it is so well situated for walking on the moor or visits to lovely old towns like Tavistock or Launceston and the fishing is excellent.

Have just returned from a nights stay at this hotel with my wife. Had utilised an attractive looking offer seen on Travelzoo which included DBB, glass of champagne and a bottle of wine all at around a third of the hotels normal price apparently.
Anyway I digress after a 3 hour journey down to Devon having passed through lots of beautiful countryside we finally arrive in Lifton. Its not the hotels fault but first impressions last and let's just say Lifton in any language would not be construed as a scenic village. It is in fact rather ugly with many dilapidated and neglected buildings being the 'norm' with a large factory just down the road as well. Anyway we park up in the hotels large car park and head into the hotels reception. Staff are friendly and check us in and take us to our room. The communal areas we are walked through are pretty forgettable really with little 'wow' factor other than one or two interesting fishing trophies, rods and pictures in cabinets. The hotel apparently is renown for it's fishing and hunting activities. So we were a little surprised to find out that the fishing activities are actually some 10/15 minutes walk away. Because of their publicity we had romantically assumed that there would be a river at the bottom of the hotels garden. The room we are allocated is ok it has everything you need but had no real personality or character if I'm being honest. Room overlooks the courtyard so is fairly quiet which is appreciated. The hotel bar is pretty unexciting although quite busy with couples eating from the bar menu. After our glass of champagne and a few G&T's we are then led to what I consider is the hotels best room which is their dining room. Dinner was ok although a little unimaginative and if it is considered one of the best restaurants in the area then that really is a reflection of the poor choice in the area and not the the food that was served (which offered no alternative dishes to the five sample menu dishes being offered) Following dinner we then had coffees in the lounge before heading to bed. Morning thankfully came slightly quicker than usual (the clocks went forward) and we then had breakfast in the dining room before checking out. In conclusion some people might find my comments a little harsh but there really is no 'wow' at this hotel and the village it is located in totally forgettable.

Dear Guest,

I am sorry that you were disappointed on your recent trip. The appearance of our village, as you point out is beyond my control, but I feel that you are a little harsh. Dartmoor is the backdrop which most consider stunning and we are in a green rolling landscape of river valleys including the Tamar valley which is an AONB as well as a World Heritage Site. Lifton is a thriving and working village which continues to grow. We have 2 pubs, village shop and post office, doctors and vets surgeries, 2 churches, traditional hardware store, petrol station and many other local businesses. We are also host to the Ambrosia dairy which is the factory you refer to. This is where all the Ambrosia rice puddings and milk products are made for the UK and overseas markets and is a major employer. It has been here since 1915 and is located where it is because the farms locally produce such good milk.

We are known for our country sports and The Field magazine in 2011 described our Fishing School as "the best in the UK". We have 20 miles of our own private fishing on 7 separate rivers . The nearest one is the River Lyd that runs through our village just 1/2 mile from the hotel.

We are a 300 year old traditional inn and not a boutique hotel. We move with the times however and provide digital TV and free WiFi in all our rooms. You experienced the 5 course tasting menu that we offer as part of the Travelzoo deal that you came on. Every lunchtime and evening we also have a traditional menu which has at least 5 choices for all 3 courses as well as an extensive bar menu and separate menu in our adjacent pub. We have been awarded 2 AA rosettes for the last 19 years so that you should give comfort that our food is to a high standard. I look forward to your next visit when I hope that we can provide you with more of a"wow".

We have just returned from a weekend break at the Arundel Arms and would thoroughly recommend it.

The hotel is situated in the little village of Lifton, the hotel has a traditional stone front but is now accessed by an entrance from the car park.

The main hotel is very traditional country house with large open fires in most of the public rooms.

When we arrived on the friday the hotel bar was closed but the staff in reception soon opened up. We ate in the restaurant on one of our evening's and everyone in our party of eight agreed that the food and the service was excellent.

The rooms are a little small bit are well furnished and comfortable, given what we paid for our stay they were much better thatn expected. Some of the carpets in the communal areas were a little shabby but nothing serious.

Breakfast was great with a decent selection served piping hot.

We would certainly recommend this hotel.

Thank you for your review. I am glad that you and your party enjoyed your stay with us.

As the hotel is 300 years old and listed, I can't do anything about the size of our smaller rooms but the stair carpet is in our next refurbishment programme.

Unfortunately we only had one night at this lovely hotel. Our main reason for going was to see if the AA rosettes awarded to its restaurant were justified. They certainly were. We were on a Travel Offer visit so we were not expecting the the very best but as it turned out everything was of the highest standard, from the friendly reception to the warm comfortable room and finally the meal We had their Taster Menu of canapes, amuse bouches, fish course, main course, and dessert . all absolutely delicious. Wine was not over priced and good.

Having to arrange a meeting in the middle of Devon & Cornwall is never easy.. hotels are never where you need them! However having used this venue many times I can safely say the standard of care does not change. The Arundel Arms has lovely welcoming staff who work with you to get the best from a meeting. We used the Tamar Suite and had 30 people come to our meeting. The room is of a good size, not the most modern but does the trick. Dinner was served promptly in the separate dining area and everyone commented on how good the food was. I stayed in a refurbished room which was lovely and breakfast the next day was fast and tasty.
