“nice break but needs tlc”
Reviewed 17 January 2012

We have just spent the weekend at the Royal Hotel, we had a very nice stay but the rooms need some tlc, they are very old fashioned but clean. As the weather was cold the windows were running with condensation but again nice and warm, lots of hot water. The swimmimg pool was the warmest I have been in quite large, but the changing rooms a bit of a mess needs new tiling on walls. The buffet dinner was very good help yourself to as much as you want of the 3 course meal including coffee not bad for £10. The breakfast just as good for £5 as much as you could eat. All in all a very reasonable break for £20 per room ie £50 per night for 2!! with a view of Lundy Island

The price is cheap and when you arrive you will see why - please don't make the same mistake as us - we left five minutes after checking in!!! The worst hotel we have ever seen!

Room Tip: Chose a different hotel if you want a nice room

We would like to thanks all staff and management for a lovely new year in Woolacoombe. I know as in other comments it is a bit tired looking but it was clean and the food was excellent offering a choice of 3 options for main course and sweet with soup and salad for starter breakfast was exceptional with choice of different cereals and self service full english .The entertainment was good on all 3 days and we wouldnt hesitate to recommend this venue for a new year break.
MANY THANKS AGAIN MAUREEN AND TERRY( from Northwich)

Room Tip: We had ground floor room with balcony and had a view of the distant waves from the bed

Normally I would have run a mile rather than enter this hotel. Very 70's looking outside and very tired. The inside no better and I must say I was very disappointed with my first look at it as well as my room. Had it been a themed hotel I would have thought ahhh bless well it takes all sorts!! But no there is a story behind the state of the hotel and I admire the mother and 2 sons that are working in a world a long way off of their training. They took on the hotel in a worse state than it is now and along with a dedicated staff they are putting their souls into making it a good place to stay.
My bed was very comfortable, plenty of food and well presented. Owners and staff very friendly and would stop what they were doing for a chat.. Entertainment excellent. I along with my 4 friends had a wonderful Christmas with you. Thank you.
I have given you just the one star for the property but I would give you 5 for effort.
All the best to you for the future. It will be hard work but worth all the effort in the end.

Room Tip: If you have walking problems ask for a room near the lift. A lot of stars in and out but chair lifts...

It definitely needs a lot of work but our stay was fine - clean room, hot water, good water pressure. If you are looking for a cheap place to sleep but don't mind a few rough edges the Royal will meet your needs. Don't stay if you will be offended by missing paint and worn carpets.

A little dated inside but clean. Stunning location especially if your room is on the seaward side. Views to die for ! Theres a really nice indoor pool too in case the weather lets you down. Breakfast is quite adequate with hot cooked or cold selection and offered in a dining area which is light spacious and great views. Theres plenty of parking but be careful if you're getting on or have mobility problems as access can be steep. We were bed and breakfast and although I believe dinner does get served I never saw any evidence of it - maybe we spent so long on what I believe are the best beaches in Europe that we missed it ! Given the price of staying here I think this place is excellent value and we'll stay again. A little tip - try the food at the Bay Brasserie at the end of the little ' high street ' - especially chilli con carne - £7.95 ish and very good !

Room Tip: Get a room facing the countryside and the ocean or you'll lose 70% of the pleasure of staying he...
