Next door to Monkey world. Friendly owners. Adjoining fields of alpacas. Staff happy to talk about the alpacas. Walking them is possible. Really peaceful surroundings. Really clean shower and toilet block. Only downside is they are not heated.
Some noise from the Bovingdon camp nearby, Chinooks and tanks, but more interesting than a disturbance. Small glider airfield next door also a source of entertainment at the weekend.

We had a lovely 3 nights stay at Longthorns. We chose to stay in the Eco-Pods as we were staying in other glamping pods on our holiday in Dorset and they seemed quite reasonably priced. Had the Shepard's Huts been a little cheaper however we may have considered them instead. The pods were very basic but cosy. It was a little disappointing not to have any kind of electricity available as all the other pods we had booked offered this. We knew what to expect though as we had read the detailed terms and conditions on the website in advance and weren't unhappy with what we got. It was clear that you get what you pay for at Longthorns and overall it wasn't bad value for money.

There are a few improvements that could be made to the facilities at Longthorns. There are eco-toilets in the glamping field but no hot water to wash your hands or sanitary bins in the ladies. There is a sink to wash up but again, there is no hot water. There are decent washing up facilities a short walk away at the main area and fridge/freezers which are useful though. The showers in the main block have no partition between the shower and the door where you hang your clothes. This means your clothes can get pretty damp and as there is no bench inside the cubicles or in the main block getting dressed is a bit of an awkward affair. A little shelf next to the shower to put toiletries on would be useful too as the showers are the kind that require you to keep pressing the button every ten seconds.

The campsite is really beautiful and is a lovely "back-to-nature" kind of place. It hosts several fields of alpacas and is right next to Monkey World which is wonderful. My partner and I are animal-mad and have annual passes to Monkey World so it was the perfect location. We booked an alpaca walk which was an absolutely fantastic experience. Our host was very knowledgeable and we learned loads about the animals and had a really decent hour long walk around the woods with them.

During our stay we also took a trip to the Tank Museum up the road which was interesting and we were within convenient driving distance of the Jurrasic Coast. Location wise you can't fault this campsite!

One minor complaint we had however was with the availability of someone in reception. The reception/shop area is unmanned, even during the hours when it was meant to be open. We understood this may have been due to the wedding fair that was being set up but it still would have been good to have had more staff available to help us. We would have liked to have used the shop but as there was never anyone there we had to venture down the road to Wool to get supplies. We also would have liked to rent a fire pit but the number that was provided on the door just rang and rang and no one responded to the text we sent, so we went without in the end. Saying all that though, the people we did meet were all very friendly and helpful. Especially the lady who led the alpaca walks (sorry we can't remember her name).

We would definitely stay at Longthorns again and will very happily recommend them.

Longthorns campsite gives the site for our annual Rotary Dorset Bike Ride in aid of Cancer Research UK at which we have 600-700 cyclists who ride a number of routes from 10-100 miles for Cancer Research UK. The facilities are first class and the owners take great care of us as well as the cyclists who camp prior to the event.
