“Smoo Cave Hotel - A work in progress”

Smoo Cave hotel is tucked away up a lane a couple of hundred yards from the cliff top.
We received a warm welcome from Lisa. Our room was not spacious but comfortable; a bit lacking in equipment such as clothes storage and baggage rack. It appears that the hotel is really a pub which the owners are trying to develop. Food could be taken in the bar or dining room, and was well cooked and plentiful.
We found the hotel OK for an overnight stay.

We made the mistake of going to the Smoo Cave Hotel for supper on our first night in Durness. There were a group of regulars at the bar and, as other reviewers have noted, their language was appalling. Not just the odd swear word, but non-stop use of the worst of swear words. We also got subjected to a rant from one who hates all people from Edinburgh...guess where we're from...We almost left, immediately, but our food arrived and we managed to wolf down our supper (a very average fish and chips), and got out of there as soon as possible. The owners/bar staff did nothing to discourage the filthy language - it's obviously "normal" behaviour there. We will never go there again, and say avoid at all costs - especially if you have kids with you - as the presence of children does nothing whatsoever to deter the bad language.

A pleasant enough stay in a nice part of the world, unfortunately marred by a couple of things. One of the bedrooms is directly above the bar area and there's a pay Juke Box (!) which plays loudly until late. Be warned, if you want an early night make sure you sleep in another room. I travelled with a friend and we had to leave the bar because of the volume and language of the regular drinkers. The range and quantity of obsene words heard was quite something and totally unacceptable in a public area of a hotel. It was made worse by the fact that the manageress was sat next to the main offender. Breakfast was excellent and served by a lovely local lady. If only she'd been behind the bar in the evening!

Had a very nice room that was newly renovated. Shared a bathroom next door that was new as well. Nice to be able to go down the pub at night without having to travel. Little downside: staff was not there at the agreed breakfast time, so we had to wait for about 45 min - but we were on holiday...

We traveled to the quiet north coast town of Durness to compete in the Heavy Athletics in the town's annual Highland games. We book the room months in advance and honestly expected an older private B&B.. We were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were a good size, the bed was comfortable, everything was clean, and looked as though it was brand new. We had a great view of the north coast from our bedroom window. The staff was friendly, the food was great, and the pub was a pleasure to sit in and enjoy. We would definitly return to the Smoo Cave Hotel on our next trip to Scotland.

After leaving John O Groats at 5:30 p.m we travelled over the top coast to Durness and found the Smoo Cave Hotel. We were able to book in immediately in a brand new room - it was so clean, modern and lovely. We had a terrific night and were just glad to find a place without having to travel further. Yvonne was wonderful and made us feel very welcome. We bought postcards from the bar. The food was delicious and we have never tasted such extraordinary cauliflower soup. It was amazing - will be back one day. The area is remote but we felt at home. Wonderful time there. Thanks Yvonne.
