Revisiting the past to see it ready for the future

Review of Bosville Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 10, 2021
My history with the Bosville goes back to the 1990s, when I travelled Scotland and especially Fort William and Skye numerous times with my best friend from Germany and on my own.

We used to go there for evening meals and always enjoyed the friendly and welcoming atmosphere and lovely food, and I vaguely remember having stayed at the hotel once for a few days later in 2001.

Recently, I felt the urge to go back decided to return to Portree and the Bosville hotel.
I was already well impressed from all the images and descriptions how the hotel had been upgraded to a four-star accommodation with refurbished Dulse & Brose restaurant and Merchant Bar and I was even more keen to book.

I booked a room for myself for three nights for mid July 2021 and received a inviting welcoming response email to the message I had added, recommending to book dinners as well. They took advance bookings to ensure a smooth running of the service and to accommodate any restrictions that were in place at the time. So I followed the recommendation and booked dinners as well.

I completed the online check-in prior to arrival and confirmed dinner dates as prompted.

It really felt like coming home when I arrived on the 16 July, it was a wonderful warm welcome I received, along with a little introduction to breakfast times and how it was organised. One of the wonderful ladies at reception (I really should have written names down, silly me) showed me to my room No. 7, carrying my suitcase.

And what a wonderful room it was! A spacious twin room with WiFi, TV and en-suite bathroom, a table and two chairs and the most gorgeous view down to the harbour and the coloured houses! I was well pleased!
The bathroom with shower came with heated towel rail and organic toiletries and there were a bathrobe and slippers for guests in the room as well, great accessories for a four-star hotel.

My stay in Portree and at the Bosville was wonderful – and even the weather was very kind, just a bit of drizzle but mostly sunny with a bit of mist in the mornings and very mild temperatures.

The breakfasts were delicious! I loved the little continental platter with yoghurt, some berries, a croissant and the little flapjack bite. But that was not all. On two mornings I chose different cooked options: the vegetarian breakfast on one day and the Eggs Florentine the next. My drink of choice was a latte, there are various choices available.

The dinners were equally tasty and beautifully prepared. I had the Skye Ale Battered North Atlantic Cod Fillet and an Irish or Gaelic Coffee when I arrived, the Chargrilled Letterfinlay Venison Burger the next night (it was a HUGE portion for me as someone who eats not that much meat), and the last night I enjoyed the Oatmeal Crusted North Atlantic Cod, followed by ice cream.

Both rooms, restaurant and bar are kept very clean and tidy and well maintained by courteous, friendly and very attentive staff. The food at the hotel is locally sourced and they make an effort with regard to sustainability and being environmentally friendly. It was also pleasant to see numerous recycling bins and facilities in Portree itself.

Portree and the Bosville are well worth a visit and a stay and I can highly recommend it. The hotel with its rustic-style interiors, accessories and free WiFi along with the Dulse & Brose restaurant and Merchant Bar have well deserved their four stars.

Thank you, dear people at the Bosville, for a wonderful time.

Dearest Elke,

Words cannot express how flattered we are by your detailed, kind, comprehensive review.
We are really proud to hear the Bosville Hotel could already offer such a comfortable base in the past and it is even more flattering to hear we could offer you another memorable stay so many years after.

The past year and a half has not been merciful on the hospitality sector and it is refreshing to read feedback like yours. Our team works really hard to provide all our guests with an enjoyable stay despite all the restrictions, limitations and current shortage of supplies. We love what we do and we are grateful to hear we could offer such a relaxing haven to return to after a day out exploring.

Once again, on behalf of the whole team, THANK YOU! Please do keep us posted about any future plans to return to Skye - we would love to welcome you back anytime!

Kind regards
Linda & The Guest Relations Team

Good size room with view of harbour, breakfast very good although was rather overpriced (expected as went in July). Location is very good although you need to sort out parking as very very limited spaces outside hotel (wasn't a big problem though).

    Dear Alexander,

    Thank you for your feedback.

Whilst we are happy to learn your room was up to your expectations, we are saddened to hear you found your stay overpriced.
April to October are the highest demand months on the Isle of Skye, which will inevitably cause the prices to rise. Higher costs are also currently a cross-country phenomenon - the consequences of the pandemic and Brexit, have caused an increase in pricing due to difficulties in distribution and supply and as a rural location, we are facing an even further increase.
We are therefore working hard to maintain our rates at a reasonable threshold, in line with pricing at similarly rated properties on the island.

All our platforms do mention the unfortunate absence of parking at the Bosville Hotel. Luckily, in addition to the publicly owned spots outside reception, there are more paid-for options only a few yards away.

We hope you had a safe continuation of your honeymoon trip.

    Kind regards

Fabulous stay at The Bosville. Lovely welcome from Sasha and shown to Room 3 which was such a surprise! So much space - lovely decor and bathroom. Very comfy bed. No view from the window but that didnt matter as we spent our time outside exploring Skye. Breakfast was amazing and i have told so many friends about how good it was! As good a breakfast as we have had anywhere. We ate in the hotel one evening and it was delicious. I have to commend ALL the staff - they were kind, respectful but most of all friendly. If i have one criticism it is the challenge of parking. Hope to be back again soon!

Room tip: Room three was great - no view but the space made up for that!

    Dear Alison,

Thank you so very much for your lovely review.
We are thankful to hear you enjoyed your stay so much you are planning on coming back.

All our rooms have been decorated and planned taking all details into account and albeit without a view, our standards doubles provide all other comforts the other room categories provide. Our aim is making all our guests' stays as comfortable and as memorable as possible and we are delighted to hear we did succeed in your case as well.

Our kitchen team will be very happy to hear you enjoyed your meals with us - our chefs work hard to provide all our guests with the freshest locally sourced produce at all times and it is great to hear you could appreciate this first hand.

Lovely stay in a nice room with a view of the harbour. Dining downstairs for dinner was very good, in fact, best chips I have ever had. Location was easy and ideal however parking can be tricky. Great base of operation for exploration of Skye. Hotel is clean, friendly, accommodating and comfortable.

Thank you for your lovely review and your kind feedback about our team.

We are very glad to learn you had an enjoyable stay and that you found the Bosville Hotel to be conveniently located.
Parking can indeed be tricky- luckily, in addition to the publicly owned spots outside reception, there are other paid-for options only a few yards away from reception.

We hope you had an equally enjoyable onward journey and we look forward to welcoming you in the future for another lovely stay!

We first stayed in this hotel last September for 3 nights and enjoyed the experience, benefiting from a 3 nights for the price of 2 deal on a "cosy" sea view room. There were still some things we wanted to do on Skye, so when we decided to do the North Coast 500 road trip this June we thought we would return for 2 nights. Unfortunately we could not get a deal this time, and the only sea view room available was a family room with one double and one single bed. We also had one lovely dinner in the Dulce & Brose restaurant on the ground floor and our bill for the nights including the dinner was nearly £700 so it is expensive if you don't get a special rate.
As before the room was very comfortable and had everything we wanted, and this room had a much bigger ensuite than our previous cosy room. The sea view was actually a view up the main street, with the sea over to the side (we were above the bar end of the building this time, rather than above the restaurant) so we had less of a sea view than our previous visit. I think in hindsight we should have opted for a non-sea view room given the cost.
Contrary to the previous review we loved the continental platter on the slate for breakfast and ate most of it each morning. The croissants are lovely and fresh and the fruit compote yoghurt is scrummy! You can always send it back when they deliver it if it you aren't going to touch it. Nice breakfast menu overall too. Recommend the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup as well as the Full Scottish!
On our other night we asked the Bosville receptionist to book us in for dinner at the Chargrill restaurant at the sister Marmalade Hotel, which was a 10-15min walk (uphill) at the back of the town. The restaurant there had a lovely view across its garden out across Portree Bay, so worth asking for a window table there if possible - we were lucky enough to be given one. It may also be better value to stay there, and some of their rooms would have that nice sea view too, although it's obviously more distant than at the Bosville. The food was great anyway - they specialise in steaks but with other dishes available (I had monkfish) and with a nice selection of sides.
I'm only giving this hotel a 4 rather than a 5 this time because of the room rate (by far the most we paid per night across 9 hotels in our NC500 trip and they were all lovely) but realise the Bosville is in a prime location and people are obviously willing to pay the rate as they were full (my husband was not happy with me when he found out what rate I had booked at!).

    Dear Roundy,

    Thank you for your review.
We are always delighted to welcome previous guests back, it is a great honor to have guests choose us again. As per our conversation during your stay, it would have been lovely to be notified of this prior to your arrival. We could have definitely worked on a mutually agreed solution in terms of room allocation/rates.
You stayed in a family room for 3 this time - as you could notice first hand, a much more roomier experience compared to the small double you had booked in September. This did unfortunately mean a higher rate, as you also stayed in June this time (part of the high season on the isle of Skye).

Thank you for your kind feedback about our breakfast and dinner - our chefs will be very pleased to hear you could appreciate the results of their hard work.
It is reassuring to receive positive feedback about the compromises we have had to adopt after the pandemic, particularly in terms of breakfast. Is has certainly not been an easy year and a half. We are doing our very best to provide all our guests with an enjoyable time away from home, after such a long hiatus.

Thank you for your comments about our sister hotel the Marmalade - the hotel was recently enriched with a separate extension and they have free parking on the premises. Their rates are therefore slightly higher than ours, however the facilities, the comfort and the team certainly make the Marmalade worthwhile.

Much like airline companies, our rates fluctuate throughout the year, based on demand, market trends and pricing at similarly rated properties on the island.
On your next visit, please do make sure to contact us before travelling - we would love to welcome you again.

I guess staying in the centre of Portree would warrant a premium price, but at £284 a night (superior room) this was not really value for money and parking is a nightmare! Pleasant enough room with some nice Scottish fabrics to brighten it up, enormous, comfortable double bed and a spacious, good quality bathroom and a nice view over the street. However, the bedroom was huge and basically empty; a small widow seat bench, but no seating area and no dressing table (why don’t women get into hotel design??) – just empty space. Breakfast was weird – a selection of croissants, yoghurt, a few berries and a broken granola bar(?) served precariously on a slate regardless of whether you wanted it or not. So much must have been wasted. Cooked items to order were good.

    Dear CarolineWR,

Thank you for your comprehensive, detailed review about your stay with us.
We are sorry to hear you feel so strongly about details that have been attentively looked into, to grant the most enjoyable stay to all our guests (even during an on-going world-wide pandemic).

We are particularly proud of our breakfast offer, considering most hotels do not currently offer breakfast or only serve a continental platter with an anonymous slice of cheese or ham. Disappointing to hear that our platters featuring a freshly made granola bar, a yogurt parfait, croissants and fresh berries seemed weird to you. All our guests are free to choose whether to consume the platter or not. We just consider it hospitable to offer a sizeable breakfast to compensate for the beautiful buffet we used to have prior to the pandemic.

All our platforms, including our website, do advertise the unfortunate absence of parking at the Bosville Hotel. In addition to the publicly owned spots outside reception, there are other paid-for options in town only a few yards away (4 minutes away by foot, at the very maximum). Might be worth redirecting your feedback to the Highland Council?

Our rates fluctuate throughout the year, in line with market trends and pricing at similarly rated properties on the island. Considering your positive feedback about the size of the room and bathroom, the breakfast offer, the comfort and the view, we are confused by your comments on value for money. All our superior rooms feature sizeable tables and chairs - we are therefore also unsure about your comments regarding the absence of a seating area in your room.

This being said, we hope you had a safe onward journey and we wish you a prosperous continuation of the year 2021.

    Kind regards,
Linda & The Guest Relations Team
