Description: Established in 2002. "Look Good. Eat Good." are the words emblazoned on the front windows at the Beauty Shop. This hip and trendy restaurant in the Cooper-Young district of midtown Memphis does both, as it conjures up images of a '50s-style beauty shop, formerly Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the façade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Nostalgia is served with a sense of humor here. The beauty shop flashback comes complete with original mint green wash basins filling in as sinks behind the hand built bar, made of tiger maple wood. The terrazzo floor is original. Glass brick stalls serve as intimate booths. Mixed with the retro renderings are modern touches such as hand-blown art-glass lights, and glamorous copper and silver-leaf walls. At this offbeat restaurant, the décor pays homage to the space's beauty parlor past, while the food offers flavors from around the globe.

“Highly Overrated”

Although the decor is fun, the food was expensive and portions small. They also didn't have enough wait staff, so service was slow.

“Great atmosphere, but they never seem to have anything on their menu.”
Reviewed 27 January 2012

They have great decorations that go perfectly with their name, and the food they have is delicious. The only thing is that they never seem to have the food that I want on the menu. I still go back though because it's worth it!

“Get the guacamole!”
Reviewed 20 January 2012

This is a fantastic, locally-owned restaurant and bar. The guacamole is fantastic, the server makes it fresh at your table. Drinks are great and the brunch menu is to die for!

“Another Great Restaurant in Memphis”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

This restaurant is actually an old beauty shop, complete with hair dryers but don't let that fun fact stop you from eating here. It's delicious!

“Funky Haute Cuisine”
Reviewed 12 July 2011

Decor: a vintage hair salon with aqua sinks, bonnet hair dryers that's had an Anthropologie-style face lift: old tin ceiling tiles are on the walls and copper-leafed, transparent gauzy drapes separate booths and tables.
Service: young, hip art student types are attentive and eager to please.
Food: Creative, but not pretentious. Some of the selections sound counter-intuitive, but they work. Whoever was cooking on 6-12-11 knew what s/he was doing. The citrus accompanying the cheese ravioli was both innovative and delicious as comfort food. The cinnamon & chili laced chocolate banana ice cream parfait was mind-blowing. My tongue froze and burned within one swallow. The blueberries tied it all together.
