Description: Established in 2002. "Look Good. Eat Good." are the words emblazoned on the front windows at the Beauty Shop. This hip and trendy restaurant in the Cooper-Young district of midtown Memphis does both, as it conjures up images of a '50s-style beauty shop, formerly Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the façade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Nostalgia is served with a sense of humor here. The beauty shop flashback comes complete with original mint green wash basins filling in as sinks behind the hand built bar, made of tiger maple wood. The terrazzo floor is original. Glass brick stalls serve as intimate booths. Mixed with the retro renderings are modern touches such as hand-blown art-glass lights, and glamorous copper and silver-leaf walls. At this offbeat restaurant, the décor pays homage to the space's beauty parlor past, while the food offers flavors from around the globe.

My wife ordered chicken, eggs, and waffle. the eggs were overcooked and the waffle tasted like leather. The chicken was basically a little better than a "mcnugget". Not much for $16.

I had a "duck", which was a small leg (tasted good), and piece of bread with two eggs. It tasted very good, but for $17, I would expect a little more than a small drum stick.

I'm not coming back.

Very cute restaurant. The menu wasn't up to date so I couldn't get either of my first two choices but the beet salad is spectacular.

The Beauty Shop is packed for Sunday brunch, so call ahead well in advance for a table!
Pros: My group of 6 was seated quickly. Our server arrived immediately for drink orders, and she came back quickly to take our order. She was knowledgeable about the menu when we had questions. Our drinks and food arrived quickly. The mimosas were large and tasty, but I wasn't a fan of the Moscow Mule- too much ginger beer. The cheese grits were delicious, as were the fries with truffle oil. The biscuits and gravy were good, but not great. Would I visit again? Absolutely!

The concept was cute and the beauty sinks in the bar and the old type hair dryer chairs were a nice touch. But the food lacked terribly. The menu is extremely limited, the portions skimpy, and you can leave not feeling like you had a nice lunch. This was a terrible disappointment!

WOW -- my friends and I stopped here for lunch a week ago and it was amazing. The servers were so friendly, the menu inventive and the restaurant itself is adorable. I ordered the Thai Cobb Salad and it was superb. The duck was crispy (not greasy) and the salad dressing just right! You definitely want to stop in and give this place a try!!
