Description: Established in 2002. "Look Good. Eat Good." are the words emblazoned on the front windows at the Beauty Shop. This hip and trendy restaurant in the Cooper-Young district of midtown Memphis does both, as it conjures up images of a '50s-style beauty shop, formerly Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the façade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Nostalgia is served with a sense of humor here. The beauty shop flashback comes complete with original mint green wash basins filling in as sinks behind the hand built bar, made of tiger maple wood. The terrazzo floor is original. Glass brick stalls serve as intimate booths. Mixed with the retro renderings are modern touches such as hand-blown art-glass lights, and glamorous copper and silver-leaf walls. At this offbeat restaurant, the décor pays homage to the space's beauty parlor past, while the food offers flavors from around the globe.

A very good restaurant. Appetizers were average, entrees of whole fish and steak were excellent. But then we ordered cake. Four different kinds. All were amazing! This restaurant is not cheap but good quality

Unbelievably fabulous food!!! Best filet in Memphis! Loved the grilled romaine salad too. Fun atmosphere, but the food stood on it's own. Pricey, so best for a special night out.

We walked in on an early Saturday evening after a show at The Orpheum (12/2 matinee showing ofPhantom- fabulous!) The 6 of us were the first ones there at 5 and did not have reservations, but were promptly seated at a table reserved for 6:30 pm.
The waitress was cool, but pleasant enough. She answered questions efficiently, but talked too fast for the elderly at the table to understand.
The drink menu offers a nice selection of wines and mixed drinks. The cucumber based mule was very good and the waitress was attentive to the men who wanted to taste the beer before ordering.
Appetizers- The mixed marinated mushrooms were flavored nicely, with a good zip of lime. The lightly fried shrimp was very good with 5 medium shrimp on the plate. A little small to share at a table of 6, but tasty.
Overall, the chef uses A LOT of ingredients and the dishes were complicated, and a bit too ambitious for the atmosphere. All the food was tasty, but the dishes were small for the price.
Dinner Selections of the night included: pork and peaches, maple-glazed steak frites, crispy duck, barramundi, and Nantucket scallops and shrimp. Steak, duck and barramundi were deemed excellent. The Nantucket scallops was too soupy and unsubstantial, and I didn’t finish.
We all thought the place was charming and were overall very pleased with our meals. However, take away some ingredients and lower the prices and you get another star.

My family and I have been for brunch. You must make a reservation. The place is very small, the food is decent.

Had dinner at The Beauty Shop one cool evening. Ate inside. Loved the beauty shop hardware incorporated in the restaurant furnishings! Great concept!
Katherine was our server. She was vivacious - friendly, efficient and knowledgeable of the menu too.
We tried the Sangrias made with champagne. I really enjoyed the white one. The Haas guacamole appetizer chips were extremely oily, however the salsa was smokey and the guacamole was flavorful and chunky.
The soup of the day was a vegetable purée. It was a real fall evening standout! Highly recommended. I thoroughly enjoyed my kale salad as well.
We finished with decaf coffee which was hot and fresh, as well as three scoops of gelato. Stay away from the Mexican chocolate gelato. I found it grainy and the chips tasted waxy. Do go for the strawberry or Earl Gray flavors as they are true to form.
