Description: 'Y Sospan is a family run cafe & restaurant. We use local meats & suppliers where possible. As well as the coffees, teas & homemade cakes you might expect we have an extensive menu of home cooked dishes & a full bar menu offering a wide range of quality wines, sprits and bottled drinks. We also offer a large range of Welsh alcoholic drinks. Y Sospan is located in the heart of Dolgellau & is a wonderful Grade II listed building. Formerly the local courthouse & Gaol the building retains many interesting historic features including the Gaol door, slate floor, plaster frieze & royal coat of arms.

What an absolute gem of a find this was!

A stone's throw from our hotel in the beautiful village of Dolgellau.

I booked a table online almost last minute, and we were warmly greeted and seated on arrival.

Having never tried Welsh wine, we opted for the white, which was refreshing. Also reasonably priced.

For starters, we had the sharing platter that consisted of a delicious homemade scotch egg, chicken fillets in a creamy satay sauce and an excellent meat terrine! A fantastic start to our meal!

I then opted for the rib eye steak, which came with ‘chips’ but skin-on wedges; however, they were tasty. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the peppercorn sauce was the perfect accompaniment!

My wife opted for the chicken burger and my daughter the beef burger. Both cooked well and tasted delicious.

The desserts were tempting, although I declined, my wife and daughter went with the Eton Mess, again, very nice!

So, to sum up, excellent service, a friendly atmosphere, some awesome tunes playing in the background and some of the nicest, tastiest food I've had for a long time!

I cannot recommend this stunning restaurant highly enough. Give it a try!

The young staff did not seem very well trained in customer service for the evening meals. We had to sit downstairs. There was a limited choice (3) for vegetarians. The chips had a very strange flavour, on enquiry they were cooked in rapeseed oil. I wonder if the oil was overheated. There are better places to eat in the evening. The refurbishment has made Y Sospan look very nice.

This was a great find during our stay in Dolgellau. The staff were polite, warm and welcoming. The menu was varied with excellent vegetarian choices. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere in the evening and on a Saturday night was full. We enjoyed it ao much, we returned on our second evening!
