“Hotel has lots of character and service friendly but unobtrusive”
Reviewed 29 April 2012

My husband and I stayed here on a 2 night mini break. The room we stayed in (Oriel 2) was very comfortable. The hotel has lots of charm inside and looks like many of the original features have been maintained but interlaced with a modern twist. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and found it a had a lovely ambience and pleasant aspect to it and the food and service was first class. I would certainly stay here again and would highly recommend it to family and friends.

A friend and I Stayed here, the first date was unavailable as there was only one twin room. I spoke to a very charming man on the phone. We were told if indeed we wanted the twin that we would have to upgrade. We did so for our own comfort. When the email conformation came through I did not second check it as I had clearly stated I wanted a twin room. To wait for this it meant our brake was going to be a whole 5 weeks from when we had initially planned.

We arrived at the Manorhaus which has no parking of its own to find the door locked. As there are yellow lines down the street we drove to a nearby street and parked there. We went to the front door and rang the bell a not so pleasant man answered the door saying "you checking in?". The conversation was awkward and sterile a simple signature was required and we were shown to oriel 2, We felt we were second class guests. We realise we had been traveling and had turned up in our comfy tracksuit and trainers. But were almost made to feel unwelcome. The Man led us to our room, we were not told "have a nice stay" or "welcome to the manorhaus" as we would expect, and there was no room for banter or general humanity. We were provided with a parking permit to put in the car and directions to a nearby long stay car park. So unloaded the bags and went to park. We did feel this could have been mentioned on the website more clearly as we almost went in the long stay car park to begin with this could have incurred unnecessary charges.

The room was spacious; the artwork leading up the hall to the room was astounding. The artwork in the room however a little disappointing. Far too much for one room, Could give one a headache. We felt the money from two of the paintings would have been far better spent on the bathroom or an upgrade of the T.V. The bed was fairly comfortable, and the bedding and towels were fresh and crisp as you would expect. The bathroom had parts lots of parts that simply were not clean looking at the finish of the decor it appeared to have a mish mash of themes and a very grubby looking shower curtain not what you would expect in a 5* hotel. The mosaic chosen for the floor was filthy. As was around the bath taps, also the two mats placed next to the bed. The curtains also had some sort of dirt down them that appeared to be toothpaste? However they were not in the bathroom but next to the bed. There was also an awful smell in the room that we could only describe as "peroxide" like smell. Extremely unpleasant.

The breakfast was good, If I had to be picky I would have liked a "full English" however the quality was great. Expect "fine" dining portions. The service however was not so great. We were again served by the same man that checked us in and again he seemed grumpy and unapproachable. Breakfast times are tight and you are given a menu to look at which gets taken the second you order. You're dishes are collected also as soon as you finish some might say efficient. However we found it most impolite. We did want to sit in the conservatory have a nice glass of water or coffee and wake up relax a little. However we were made to feel a little on edge.

Our biggest disappointment was the fact we did not get the twin room we had hoped for. We were told that the email conformation stated double, we were most upset about this. It appeared we were in a full house and had to share a bed???? When we explained that we had booked a twin we were made to feel as though we had clearly not as the email conformation we had been sent suggested double. We did not book through a website we booked directly through manorhaus. As we were made to feel as though it was our fault we continued with our stay. Although the bed would have been comfortable if we had indeed been a couple this was not the case. My friend had driven and had a bad knee injury. Driving had put some strain on it. That night while I was asleep she got up and slept on the sofa. Meaning she was in a lot of pain the next day. We therefore could not drive to Chester and go to the zoo as we had planned. Visit the town and it was even painful for her to walk around ruthin itself. We never even made it to the castle. We did though have a little walk around and it was our saving grace. The locals were pleasant and the whole community atmosphere was lovely. We were tipped off by a shpkeeper that the star did amazing food and we had the most wonderful lunch there 5* food at its best. However the look of disappointment glazed over our eyes as we had to leave.

The "rules" are plentiful, the staff or host as it were dismissive. It would not be a good to take children there as the atmosphere is far from bubbly and friendly. Did we have a good time in ruthin Yes we did, did we have a good time in the manorhaus? No we did not. When we got home on sat from our lunch and a spot of shopping we had done in the most delightful boutique shops. We took a taxi to Tesco just to see if we could source an air bed and some bedding so we could both get a good night’s sleep. We did not want to use the rest of the services, although we did get a DVD from the library and watched it in our room. We were the first to check out the next day. We did not make a point of complaining as we did not find the host approachable.

There was Wi-Fi throughout. The building is lovely, set in a really nice town. The art work is worth a look in itself. I genuinely feel I would not stay again, the hosts priority seems to be the regimented conformity of the building and lacks care and hospitality of the guest. The facilities and lack of hospitality rate this a 3 star for me personally. Although I travel frequently with work have stayed at over 50 hotels in the last year. I do say my preference is impersonal but friendly. Hilton and such other chains are great for offering such a service, although I’m not one to dislike boutique hotels. Gwesty Cymru Aberystwyth for example is excellent and the staff are always more than friendly. If I had to travel to ruthin again? I would take a chance and stay at the star if the food and staff is anything to go by then I doubt many would leave dis-satisfied. Although I would go to the manorhaus bar early in the evening just to catch a glimpse of their fabulous artwork. Also if you are luck the cheery host will greet you! A sides from this there are lots of local pubs, on friday night we went for a meal and a couple of drinks the people are so friendly.

We stayed at the Manorhaus for a 2 night weekend break. It's a gem of a hotel - stylish but really comfortable too - in the centre of lovely Ruthin. We were made to feel so welcome by Chris; he and the rest of the team are so friendly and helpful and work so hard to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay for all their guests. We stayed in Oriel 1 (the Venetian rennaisance room) which is cosy and stylishly decorated and with a really comfy bed. We ate in the restaurant one evening - the food was fabulous, cooked to a high standard, full of delicious flavours and always thoughtfully presented. We made use of the sauna and steam room during our stay, also the cinema, where we had our meal served on the second night! What a great treat.. We will definitely go back to this great little hotel and are recommending it to all our family and friends.

Room Tip: Look at the hotel website before your stay - helpful pictures and descriptions of each room.

We went to manorhaus to celebrate my boyfirends birthday in December. The expectations i had of the hotel were superseded by the stay itself. The staff catered to our every need and made us feel like VIP guest throughout our whole stay.
We stayed in the largest room (Oriel 8)which has a wet room and roll top bath as well as a mini lounge area. The room design, decor and ambience was fantastic!
We had dinner on both nights of our stay, every dish we ordered was finely prepared and presented and cooked to perfection!
We will definitely be going back to Manorhaus after such an enjoyable stay!

I was surprised to find Ruthin a much larger town than I expected, with plenty of pubs and eateries. We received courteous and professional welcome from all concerned. Our room (oriel 7) was at the top of this quaint Georgian property, overlooking the carpark, but very nicely decorated in a contemporary fashion. The very comfortable bed resulted in quality sleep. We stayed for 2 nights and had breakfast included in the price (had the best bacon I've tasted in a long time) We booked a table at the restaurant on Saturday night and were really impressed with the quality of the meal, which we thought good value too. (£32.00 for 3 courses) Although we didn't have time to use the private cinema, sauna or library, it was nice to know these facilities were provided and they added to the attraction of the hotel. Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this comfortable, styliish and centrally positioned hotel.

Manorhaus is small but perfectly formed! It's stylish with really first class touches such as a library, a sauna, an in-room roll top bath and our favourite - the private cinema room! The food in the restaurant was excellent - and such is its popularity that you really do need to book a table in advance. Contrary to some other reports on here, we found the owners to be amazingly helpful and courteous - both gave us plenty of suggestions regarding places to explore in the local area and were keen to check our stay was going to plan. Our only quibble was an overly soft mattress but then again we're quite fussy and if that's the only negative we could come up with then Manorhaus really is doing something right!

Room Tip: Some rooms are bigger than others - check before you book.

Our room (Oriel 6, Cefyn Burgess' Gallery showcasing bedding and soft furnishing) was the smallest of the eight rooms, but beautifully appointed and including a lovely wetroom. My wife and I are not tall so it was not too much of a problem to us as it could be for people over six feet tall. We stayed for two nights mid week as we couldn't make a booking for a weekend within the voucher period which was a gift to us from our daughters.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very stylish and comfortable with secondary double glazing which gives good sound...
