The rock formations glow in shades of orange and yellow and red. It is just beautiful! First trail I took was from halls gap. There was nothing much to see along the way but what made it special was the sunset; and we had the pinnacle to ourselves. It was late November and as we were going up from 5pm, we ran into people coming down already. We stayed for the whole duration of the sunset which was again, stellar! Got back down at 9pm. Pretty dark but the sky was clear and stargazing was a good water break time. It probably took us 3.5 hours roundtrip with our pace from Halls Gap to Pinnacle.
On my second time, we started off from wonderland carpark. The highlight here is the "Grand Canyon" of the Grampians. It's just a short stretch of beautiful rock formations. The rest of the hike at the end of the canyon was quite hot as we did it late January. Not much shade, but along the way you'll find the "Cooling Chamber" which is a good pit stop before the climb. We did this trail to pinnacle for 3 hours round trip with our pace.
The third time was just last Easter weekend, peak season. We started at Sundial Carpark this time as Wonderland carparks were full. This is probably is the easiest and the shortest among the 3. Probably 1 hour each way. But it was hard not to stop as the last stretch of the ascent promised beautiful rock formations along the way. I enjoyed scrambling through rock formations just for fun haha. This trail doesn't require scrambling. You get to have a full view of Wartook reservoir as well.
What I don't like about getting to Pinnacle on peak season is that it gets really crowded. There is actually plenty of space and we didn't bother getting into the balcony as there were good spots around that gets you a better vantage point of everything, and good photo ops as well. ;)
Overall, Pinnacle is probably the commonest place everyone goes to. But aim to go there for sunset. Don't forget your water and lights!
