Visited with friends on Easter Monday.
It was very relaxing walking around looking at the beautiful display of water lilies.
Best time they told us is to visit End of January to mid February, but we still enjoyed wandering around.
Cafe and restaurant available also picnic baskets are welcome, plenty of areas to sit.

Then went to Warburton for lunch and a stroll around there too.

We first heard about these gardens on a TV gardening show and decided to check them out while visiting Melbourne (for the International Garden Show). Although it's a fairly long drive out of town along what is often a heavily clogged motorway it was thoroughly worthwhile.
The gardens spread over several acres, but carefully constructed paths make it a relatively easy walk even for those of us with aching arthritic joints. Even better there are shelters every few meters, allowing one to stop and enjoy the view over lakes filled with lotus plants and flowers. The giant water lilies were sensational. There is a cafe just after the entry: not the greatest restaurant, but adequate, although taking your own picnic basket as others have suggested is not a bad idea.

I'd allow about 90 minutes to drive from central Melbourne and two to three hours to visit the gardens, although you could spend more time just watching the lilies and lotuses floating on the water or fluttering in the breeze. A children's playground should keep little ones occupied while their parents just enjoy the experience.
And don't forget to take a hat and umbrella: Melbourne's weather is very reliable:it constanty changes.

I saw an article regarding the Giant Amazon Lily on TV so decided a visit was warranted. It was lovely to stroll around the lakes and view so many different lilies, pods and plants. The giant lily didn't disappoint, amazing! the grounds are easily accessible and I did see a lady enjoying the gardens from a wheelchair. Hubby got a tad bored after seeing so many lakes and lilies but enjoyed the visit overall. Plenty of places to sit and reflect, a fairy garden for the kids and a coffee shop/food stall if required. Staff were friendly and inviting.

November to April is the flowering time for the lotus. After being told by several people how beautiful the gardens are, a friend and I made the drive out and were so glad we did. Even on a week day the gardens were very busy - would hate to think what it would be like at the weekends. Apart from all the stunningly beautiful flowers we were so impressed by the whole setup. Other beautiful flowers are planted throughout the gardens and there are so many shelters with seats, to just rest and take in the beauty of the surrounds. Do make sure to take a hat though! They do provide umbrellas but on a busy day you may not get one. A very cute children's playground is a great idea for little ones who may get bored with just wandering. Take a picnic or eat in the cafe. Food was adequate although we were disappointed when the lotus chips we ordered, arrived very over cooked. The nursery looked wonderful although we didn't leave ourselves enough time to explore that. Be prepared to spend at a minimum, a couple of hours just wandering round or sitting quietly.
