Close up and personal! The "Jeep"
(actually modified Suburbans) tour is a fun way to become involved with the wonderful geology, flora, and fauna. We did the two hour "Spring" tour and because it was such fun wished we had signed up for the three hour one that reaches the very bottom of the canyon. Two "Jeeps" two couples each. Driver/guides were very local and had lots to share.
Suggest call a day or two ahead to reserve and get a weather guess. Very safety oriented and if rain makes the roads too soft, no tour.
This was a last minute experience of Palo Duro Canyon for the two of us. As seniors, we were not sure this was for us, we took the risk. And what an experience it was for us. Fantastic! We were well taken care of and the staff was more informative and fun than we ever expected. Don't miss this. The tour we recommend is the two hour. This one takes you down into the canyon. Don't miss the Hudus (spelling?). What a treat the two tour guides were. Highly recommended! Safe, fun and a great learning experience for young and Old.
Took the 3hour tour and enjoyed every minute, was worth the price! Don was a great driver, told lots of stories of the area and was able to answer every question we had. Keep your arms inside the no-door Surburban cuz the twists and drops along the "road" will have you grabbing onto something. Dusty and hot on our July day, but they give a bottle of water to take along, and we were welcome to bring snacks or other drinks. We stopped frequently for amazing views and lots of photos.
They told us the ranch will probably be sold, so who knows how much longer this will be available. Yes, the place looks a little rundown and there's only a portapotty but it's all part of the adventure!
We called and made reservations and made the trek up from DFW to take the jeep ride. All was Ok until we arrived and then we found out that the driver had called in sick and that the tour would not be available. What happed to plan B? Surely they could have found someone else to drive. We had a 12:30 appointment, so there were a few other couples in the same boat. We plan on going back next year - so, if we do get the jeep your I will update this post. For now, just kind of PO'ed about it.
Located next to the entrance to Palo Dura Canyon State Park this is very easy to find. The jeep ride was so much fun and so interesting. The unspoiled canyon gives one a first hand look at what the canyon must have looked like when it was the home of the plains Indians. The open air jeep ride was a little bumpy but so much fun. Our guide was interesting and informative. He explained why this piece of the canyon is privately owned and in its' wild state. I would recommend this ride to anyone.who loves the out of doors.
the ranch is up for sale but the Tour guide was funny and knowledgable. He told us that if we saw a good photo up to have him stop and he would... he did and I was able to take great photos with my Canon. (sorry no photos) The tour was a bit too short but only because one of the trails was cut off by the recent rains. We just missed the Thistle bloom, but it was still a beautiful sight.
