“Urban Oasis Defined”

Reviewed March 31, 2015

Only four miles from downtown Dallas, and about 40 yards from the parking lot, you can experience a whole lotta nature.
The original use as a fish hatchery explains the way the paths run in quadrants around sunken overgrown areas. You can let your kids run free and enjoy the shaded areas supplied by all the trees (keep an eye on the younger ones, there are concrete and metallic artifacts of the hatchery and some drop offs) or you can move quietly and listen to all the birds. There is a colony of beautiful Monk parakeets that move through, as well as hawks, cardinals, warblers, goldfinches, etc.
Park at the White Rock Lake Spillway and take the hike bike trail left (away from the water) and watch for the path to your right. First thing you do is cross a bridge: stop and look for turtles and herons.
