If you like history and have the time, it is well worth booking a tour of Jay Gould's restored, live-in railroad car called Atalanta. You can not go in the car on your own, you have to get your ticket and tour time at the Excelsior Hotel across the street. The guides are very good, they can tell you about the restoration and the history of how Gould and Jefferson are connected. But even if you don't care about the history, you should go to see the luxury of how one of the wealthiest families in the US of the late 1800s traveled. When you first enter the car there is a living room, then you see several bedrooms, the kitchen and dinning room. There is even a place for the cook to sleep. The wood finish is beautiful and interior furnishings shows off how comfortable the Gould family could travel.

This is not just any old railroad car. It was honesly used by Jay Gould and his family and has been renovated very nicely. You get the opportunity to see the luxury available to a wealthy family who could afford their own train car for traveling. It has a living room, several bedrooms with sinks, a kitchen and place for the cook to sleep. In the back there had been a formal dining room. Go across the street to the Excelsior Hotel to schedule a tour. It's not expensive and worth going inside and hearing some interesting facts and stories.

Had seen this a couple of years ago. We stayed at the hotel across the street, which made this event very easy. The cars were interesting and I have thought about them since.

It is incredible that this piece of history was found and is restored in Jefferson. Stepping into Atalanta allows you to see how the wealthiest traveled in the late 1800's. It will make you long for the days of fancy passenger rail travel and may make you want to grow a beard.

In the golden age of US passenger railroading this car was the personal transportation of Jay Gould and family, similar to Donald Trump's personal 757 aircraft of today. You have to buy your ticket at the hotel across the street and you are assigned a tour guide who is very knowledgeable of the history and restoration of this wonderful rail car. It's very impressive for the quality of the interior furnishings and equipment. This was a very elegant, comfortable way to travel. It is well worth your time to see.
