We love the Gage, but were disappointed by a few things this trip. First we had to switch rooms because we added an extra night at the last minute, but housekeeping didn't wait for us to check out before starting to clean our room from the first night. The second night we stayed in the Carriage House, and we liked the screen porch, private pavillion behind the Captain Shepherd House, and ranch decor of our room. Problems started when the toilet kept belching up air bubbles while water backed up the shower drain when the guests on the other side of the Carriage House took showers. We tried calling the front desk, but there was no phone in the room (problematic because cell phone reception is so spotty). I finally got a signal to call the front desk and they sent a maintenance guy, but he tried to convince us it was just old pipes. In the morning when I took a shower water wouldn't drain and I could hear the camode gurgle again. My husband didn't get a shower since he was worried about flooding the room (although the front desk clerk offered a shower at check out, but we were on a schedule to head home).

The staff was friendly, we loved the pool, firepit, bar, & restaurant, so we will stay at the Gage again, but not in the Carriage House.

Beautiful stay! They had no television but that wasn’t why we stayed there for. Have stayed in other National Parks but this was great! We had a beautiful bathroom. Breakfast and dinner was a short walk down the street, reasonable prices!

We enjoyed the Gage. Room in the older hotel. Delightful lobby. No elevator. Coffee and small muffins in the lobby in the morning. Enjoyed the gift shop- several doors away. Especially enjoyed the Gage Gardens. Some native plants. A lovely rose garden. Various locations in the garden for weddings. And a putting green. About 2 blocks from the hotel. The Gage appears to own most of the property in town.

Thank you for your kind words about the Gage Hotel and our V6 Collection.
We are pleased you made it over to the Gage Gardens. Though it is beautiful now, you really should see it in it's prime (April, May and then September).
Maybe another visit is in order?
We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to see you again soon!

My husband and I had an amazing early October stay at The Gage. We used the hotel as a base for Big Bend National Park and for visiting Marfa. The staff welcomed us heartily and bent over backwards to make sure we had a great stay. Our room in the the Los Portales section was lovingly decorated in West Texas style, and the bed was sublime. The pool was a delight for a warm afternoon. We ate one night in the 12 Gage restaurant. The steak I had was, quite simply, the best I ever have eaten. As a base for BBNP, The Gage requires a bit of a drive, but the drive turned out to be less of a burden than we had expected and is spectacular. The hotel is reasonably well-situated from Marfa. We spent a day in Marfa (Chinati Weekend) and ended with dinner. We did not find the drive back burdensome. In fact, it offered the benefits of a stop on the way back to catch the Marfa Mystery Lights. Marathon is a fun little town with some good eateries and wonderful folks who are so worth meeting. We plan to return to The Gage just for the pleasure of staying there.

Room tip: I doubt one can go wrong with any room, but the Los Portales rooms are thick with charm.

We stayed here for one night when we left Big Bend National Park. Part of us stayed in the original building and the other stayed in the Los Portales. It was a fun place to stay and we would stay here again.

A couple of notes:
There were no TVs in our rooms which was fine, but something to know if that's important to you.
Our walls in the Los Portales room were very thin and we could easily here our neighbors' conversations in person and on the phone. I used earplugs so I could sleep.
The trains go by throughout the night in the railroad town, and they sound their horns, too. Again, earplugs were key.

Room tip: The Los Portales room was bigger than the room in original building. Pets are allowed in Los Portales rooms but not in original building.

We are sorry we can't do anything about the train, but hopefully the birds in the courtyard make up for it a little.
