“More than just the lights”

about 10-15 minutes from the center of town, the Marfa Lights Viewing Area is located off east highway 90. The viewing area has an amazing view of the Mitchell Flat. At night, you may get the chance to see the lights dancing and darting around the horizon. We were lucky enough to see the lights, which were unforgettable. According to most reports, the lights are not visible every night, so we were lucky to have witnessed them. If you don't get to see them, don't worry. The night sky over the viewing area is so beautiful, there aren't enough words to describe the magnificence. We were there on a night of total darkness, allowing the stars to just jump out at us. We drove for twelve hours to get to Marfa, and the views of the night sky alone were completely worth it.

I just drove out to the viewing area a half hour before dark. I only had to wait about 20 minutes before the lights appear.

“Maybe you will/maybe you won't see the lights”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2012

We visited Marfa 6 years ago and had an incredible time viewing the Marfa lights at the viewing center about 9 miles east of Marfa on route 90. This time we saw nothing. Maybe it was the weather - lots of thunderstorm activity on the southern horizon. It still is fun to visit the viewing area and see the array of stars.

“The chances of seeing the Lights aren't great, but it doesn't mean you won't have fun.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

When in Marfa....this is one of those things: some people see 'em, some don't. Locals told me that IF the lights are out-n-about, you can see them better from Pinto Canyon Rd, ask someone for directions. But going to the viewing station is a nice opportunity to be out under the amazing west Texas sky, meet some fellow travelers or locals going out for an after-dinner excursion. It's a 10 minute drive from town, take a jacket even in the summer, and check your skepticism at the door!

“We didn't expect to see mystery lights but to enjoy the stars”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2012

We were returning to Marfa from Alpine after dinner and decided to stop. We thought that our 7&8 year old grandsons with overactive imaginations would definately enjoy it and I always enjoy seeing the stars on a clear west TX night. To our surprise we did see the lights - It didn't take very long after it was dark to see one or two appear - float around - split and disappear then reappear. Everyone could see the same things - it wasn't a situation when some in the croud thought they saw something. I'm sure there is an explaination for them but I really don't care - I'll just keep on calling them mystery lights. It was a fun way to end a day with our grandkids. By the way the night sky was fantastic - the kids enjoyed the view of Jupiter, Venus and Mars.
