“A Few Observations”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

OK here goes – I’m not going to repeat what everyone else has said. We do like spending time at this hotel – we were there in Jan & March - never seen so many "returnees" of different nationalities but here are a few observations.

New innovation – the hotel has now started serving bar snacks, either to the small bar area outside the lunch time restaurant or directly to your beach bed.

Which leads on to?

They could do with a few more places in the bar area – as the weather was great, people were waiting for a table to clear in order to get a drink & sit under a parasol.

The dress code in the restaurant at night time needs to monitored & reinforced – there were a few instances of people wearing shorts & baseball caps – surely its not asking too much for people to dress appropriately.

The “House Band” is changed every 2 months – the one we caught in March were very German orientated – having said that, it is the Germans who dominate the dance floor – they really do enjoy their dancing.

One of the main attractions of this hotel is its proximity to the sand dunes – however as someone else has already touched on, it can also be its downfall. In January the wind really got up & it constantly rained sand for 3 days, to such an extent that it was impossible to take advantage of the sun. The terraces & pools were submerged in sand & it was not pleasant at all. It doesn’t happen often however. A minor irritation & it won’t stop us becoming “returnees”

My husband and I stayed in this lovely hotel at the beginning of March 2012.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, with excellent food, helpfull and friendly staff, lovely clean room. We were lucky to have a room on the top floor with views over the fantastic sand dunes, the pool and grounds, and the sea beyond. Great for sun lovers as it was very hot with no shade whatsoever on the large balcony. Which most days was covered in sand, it seemed to be in the air! The maids cleaned it off every day but within the hour it seemed to be back with us.The rooms were cleaned daily, towels changed daily, sheets changed as often as you wished then to be.
I am a very healthy eater and am very fussy about what I eat. But I can say that I wanted to eat everything that I saw in the dinning room. The food was not swimming in grease, no lumps of fat in the meat. The salads were dressing free, with lots of dressings for you to add yourselves.
At breakfast there were jugs of milk to suit all tastes from skimmed milk to butter milk. Lots of fresh fruit, Yoghurts, cereals nuts and grains. Prunes dates apricots etc. There was cheese ham salami smoked salmon caviar and much more. Or if you would prefer as did my husband there is the English option of cooked breakfast with Bacon (english Bacon) sausage, eggs cooked in every way, beans tomatoes etc. Also crepes, jugs full of freshly squeezed juices. Every type of bread you can think of, sliced or to slice yourself. cakes and pastries. I could go on for hours and still would have not mentioned all the choices. Oh and I forgot to mention the sparkling wine, if you so choose.
The evening dinner was the same, so much choice and not enough time to sample all of it. The wine menu was not overly expensive for a 4/5* hotel.

The evening we spent in the hotel as the resort of Playa de Ingles was not to our taste. The hotel is quite a distance away from the resort centre so that is not a problem. The evening entertainment is aimed at the german guests, but if you are happy to chat to other guests over a cocktail it is a lovely hotel to spend your evenings.

We can not fault the hotel at all in any way, and we would return again. There is one word of warning to anyone wishing to visit this hotel in early march. 1.Do not travel with Thompsons Holidays.. 2. Avoid arriving when Gran Canaria holds its annual carnival in the resort of Playa de Ingles. As all the roads are closed. And as Thompson are not prepared for this at all. Even though this happens every year. We arrived early evening, whilst on the coach we were told we would not be able to be dropped off right next to our hotel. Then that 50,000 locals had arrived in the resort for the carnival. The coach then stopped on the main dual carrigeway behind the resort. We all had to retrieve our suitcases and carry them over the road footbridge into the town full of party goers. We then had to walk pulling our cases through hundreds and thousands of party goers dressed in fancy dress, Then we had to walk against the crowd as they floats full of revellers were coming towards us.This was hard going, and very noisy. Then as promised by Thompson we were taken to another Rui Hotel in the centre of this caos where we could get a meal and a drink, until the road reopened (we were told at 9pm) But on arriving thompson refused to pay for this meal, and told us to go back out into the caos to find a bar to have a snack to the value of 10E. Which we refused. So as it was an all inclusive hotel we were not allowed to purchase any food or a drink as they didnt take cash. We were then left by Thompson to get taxi's ouselves when the road reopened. This was after midnight. So we sat there for Four hours with no refreshment at all.
On arrival at the hotel the dinning room had been left open with a cold buffet for us to get a snack from. The hotel was excellent and so was the resident Thompson representative in there, (claire) But the Transfer to get to the hotel was horrible, especially for some of the older guests, and guests with health problems.
So avoid the beginning of march if you dont want to go through our nightmare. As Thompsons have no alternative for you. ie taking you to another resort hotel until the roads reopen.

But after this the hotel made up for it as we had a lovely relaxing week by the lovely clean pools to swim in. Thank you Rui Palace.... See you again

Room Tip: Book a sea view room!!!

Surely the best hotel in Playa del Ingles (if you want better and bigger, stay in Maspalomas). Very beautiful building, nice pools, very friendly staff.
Also a quiet place, which is good considering the atmosphere in Playa del Ingles.
Rooms are comfortable even if the furnitures seem to be quite old! Mattress is hard enough but pillows are horrible, too small and soft!!!
About the food, well, that's not the best part of the hotel. It's not bad but when you pay about 280 € per day, you would like something more!
If you are old, that's the good place to stay. And if you're gay too, the hotel is very gay-friendly.

We have now stayed at the Palace for our xmas break for the past 8 years and would not go anywhere else.As soon as you arrive and get the welcome home friends from reception it is a wonderful experience.Nothing is to much bother for the staff and they go out of their way to make your holiday special. The rooms are a little small for a hotel of this standard but have all the amenites that you need except tea/coffee making facilties which is a must for uk visitors but we take our own travelling kettle. The food is excellent ,breakfast has so many things on the buffet it is hard to choose and the dinner menu is also varied with hot and cold food and the salad and dessert buffets are to die for,all of the catering was of a very high standard.Try to get a sea view it is so worthwhile waking up and seing the lovely azure sea and sand dunes before you.Have stayed at many places in playa de ingles but none reach the standard and friendliness of this jewel in the sand.Have already booked for next xmas and new year and looking forward to meeting up with all those friends that like us return year after year.On a negative note i agree with another reviewer about the dress code, most of the people dress up for the xmas period and i believe it spoils the ambience when you see people slopping around in t shirts, vests, shorts, cut off jeans and flip flops so would also like hotel to enforse this policy

Room Tip: ask for centre of hotel with sea and pool view

This was our second Riu holiday, this one was half board. as expected everything was great, food, cleanliness, staff etc. It was mainly couples, but generally a lot older than us(52 & 57) but maybe we don't realise how old we look!! I think I could count on one hand the number of couples that appeared younger than us.

The evening entertainment which we looked in on once, was singing and polite clapping, not our cup of tea, but then we are not bothered about that really happy with entertaining ourselves. There were quite a number of same sex couples which did not bother us, as with any holiday it's behaviour that counts and we had no problems here. Children were almost non existant, pool entertainment was non existent, so if you like peace and quiet you'll love it here, also there was no mad early morning rush for sunbeds.
points worth being aware of:
You are allocated a table number and sitting for dinner at either 6pm or 8pm for the duration of your stay, we were allocated 8pm, which is far too late for me to eat every night, so we asked to be changed which they did from the Monday. You can do the buffet graze or have table service for the main course, He grazed and I was waited on which was great as the meal was always served on a hot plate and the food was nice and hot too. You can also book to go in the Krystal Restaurant which is well worth it at no extra cost, we did this twice during our stay.
15 euros for safe.

Sitting by the pool for seven days is a bit much for us, we can only chill for so long, so we did hire a car for a couple of days, we did ask the rep for details but the one recommended was very pricy at 45 euros per day plus insurance, we walked up the main road from the hotel and found that generally it was 30-35 euros, but one company had a special offer of 65% off and we got a fiat panda with air con for 40 euros for 2 days including insurance with a 50 euro refundable deposit, they were called Suarmez but do check T&C's as we found the insurance is void if you don't fill out an accident report, there was not one in the car and I struggled to get a blank form out of the old gentleman who did not speak good English. The fuel bill was 27 euros, we had to return the car with the same amount of fuel which was half a tank.
We did a tour of the island and up into the mountains which was stunning, do take long trousers/jacket/shoes as it was pretty chilly up on the peak. Mist freezing onto the pine needles was very unexpected. Driving was OK up in the mountains you need a head for heights in parts and some caution on the winding roads, I’d rather do it in a car than a coach.

When booking we did look at the Riu wikiki cheaper and all inclusive, but were glad we didn't as location was did not look good when we passed it on the dual carriageway.

We have a Rui membership card which you can apply for on line and earn points it's all on the website and worth looking at.

Room Tip: Room 1021 on the first floor balcony looking over the dunes (south east), sun from sunrise till 13:0...

We've stayed at the Riu on three occasions now and each time has been great. The staff are very attentive and always on hand to help. The food is amazing and always fresh, whether at breakfast or evening dinner. The accommodation varies, but try and get a sea view if you can. The cleanliness is always good.
