Great Stay, Wonderful Management, Though Needs Some Changes

Review of The Faust Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 29, 2023via mobile
Me and my Fiancé stayed in this hotel for our 3rd anniversary and I am very happy with the experience! The Faust is thriving under new management the staff was very kind and helpful and the vibe was elegant and charming, the location of the hotel just doesn’t get better it’s right across the street from some amazing shops, bakeries, and coffee shops. The beds were very comfy and clean and we slept like babies! Also weirdly enough the hotel soap smelled nice and was definitely not your average hotel soap. Though I did have to give 4 stars because the restaurant down stairs is closed and under construction. As a designer here are some tips to elevate the stay for guests. Adding robes, glasses, and water bottles in the rooms as you have to go all the way to the lobby to get a glass of water. As well as adding some Edison lightbulbs in the bathrooms that will make the lights less fluorescent and add to the historic charm of the building. All in all great stay 100% would stay again.

The Faust exudes history and charm, and the location is excellent for walking around downtown as well as convenient to local attractions. The staff was also friendly and attentive. All went well and the room was comfortable, as expected. Another pleasant stay and I look forward to next time!

Our family chose to stay at the same hotel for a family event at the Civic Center (which is a nice property near the hotel). We knew that there would be some serious partying and drinking and the short walk back to the hotel was a big plus. In retrospect, there are many Lyft and Uber options available in the city to get us to a better hotel safely, and not have the issues of the Faust to contend with for a couple of nights
We were aware of the bad reviews on TA (and, some of our group were happy they stayed elsewhere), but the historic nature of the property was compelling. The bad reviews are merited!
There simply are too many negatives that need immediate attention for us to even considering a return visit. Here are a few of the ones to be aware of prior to booking. The rooms are cooled with low quality A/C window units that are incredibly noisy and not conducive to restful sleep. The walls are paper thin and you can hear conservations and laughter. The 6" raised floor in the small poorly lighted bathroom is a pain and dangerous (you sign a waiver at check in), and the fixtures dated and ugly. The bar tile has dirt ond mols on the caulk. The beds have been used for far too many years--very uncomfortable. There are no comfortable chairs in the small and dated room. The TV is simply "awkward" to use--we had to call the desk to send up a person to even get it launched for us. There is no safe in the room. There were 3 hangers in the closet! The halls are poorly lite and dingey. There is not adequate parking for the guests and bar patrons--you have to find spaces in a dirt lot or at a lawyers office because the asphalt lot behind the hotel can only take 40 cars. The front entrance is all torn up and the curb appeal is sorely lacking. The one elevator is the slowest one in the world and ugly. The staff has to warn you to "watch your step" as you enter or exit because of a dangerous step (in fact, the entire site is a risk managers nightmare). On the plus side, the bar is well staffed with friendly folks that serve good drinks. We did not try any of the food.
I am fully aware of the costs involved in the work that needs to be done to make this just an average hotel, but if this hotel is to survive in the competitive world, change needs to happen.

Have been staying here for over 35 years, whenever we visit NB. Enjoyed our recent 2-night, 2 room stay. Rooms were comfy, including the beds, pillows & linens. Staff was super friendly & helpful (in the Pub, also). Historic Hotel that is super well located w/easy parking & an on-site Pub. Yes it’s age shows here & there, but it’s charm makes up for it.
