Mustang Towers
Reviewed 2 April 2012

We arrived on the island the Saturday night os spring break - what a zoo! We had a little trouble finding the Mustang Towers but it was sure worth it. The weather was a little dicey but that justed added to the beauty of the Gulf and the sunrises from our balcony. The place was very clean and te unit was comfortable. When you sat on the couch you didn't go all the way to the floor! We didn't get a chance totry the ppol and hot tub, but heard the pool was cool and the the hot tub was slightly warmer than the pool.

Room Tip: All rooms have balconies and views of the Gulf

These units overlook the Gulf; the views from the balconies are wonderful and peacuful. Every morning the sunrises were spectacular. We stayed during January when you pay for 3 nights and get the 4th free, so daily cost was reasonable. The pool is not heated and is unusable at this time with daily temp around 70, but the hot tub was great and big enough for a crowd. Had a problem with their in-room Internet, they finally got it fixed and management credited me with a free day for my hassle. By the way, there is a very cool coffee shop down the road (Coffee Waves) with free wi-fi.

We stayed here a few times. They are fairly well kept up, clean, in reasonably good shape for their age, and quite comfortable. Much better than a hotel for our money. We stayed in a 3-bedroom unit though there were only 2 of us. If we had brought our children and grandkids it would have been a spectacular bargain, as there was room enough for 8 people. This facility is a further drive from town, but only by a few minutes, and it is quieter. Hard to find coming back at night. A GPS helps; there is also a large water tank on the right that serves as a landmark for the entrance.

Port A in the winter is quiet, the beach is empty and you can park at the ocean's edge and fish or read all day without interruption. Most of the restaurants are open, and there are some good ones. Try the Pelican Club and the Seafood & Spaghetti Works (great fish dishes). But the lack of crowds cuts both ways. Many of the excursions--sightseeing and fishing boats--that depend on a minimum number (usually 10) do not go out during the week. Weekends fill up, but weekdays can be iffy. Best to call around: Dolphin Dock, Fisherman's Wharf, Woody's. We found several places had 4 or 5 people signed up for Bay fishing, and nobody went out. If they would pool their waiting lists and take turns going out they would all do better in the winter. The local Chamber could do them a great service there. The Whooping Crane boat excursion (from Rockport, but also leaves from Port A) did depart as scheduled and was worthwhile.

In all, Port A in January was worthwhile, relaxing, and the Mustang Towers was an affordable and comfortable venue for us.

We recently spent 3-nights at Mustang Towers and to be honest we didn't know what to expect based on previous reviews and the photos. It was fantastic for us. We have friends who are owners of one o fthe 3-bedroom condos and they take good care of it.

The kitchen was fully-stocked with everything we needed to make all of our meals. We borrowed a puzzle and a dvd from the office and stayed indoors mos the time while enjoying the ocean views.

I understand the amonia (not cat urine) smell concerns as we did experience this when entering the room; however as I understand it is a great cleaning product that helps keep away mold and mildew, commonly found in humidity-type enviromnets. We opened up the patio doors and lef the front door open with the ceiling fans running for about an hour and it cleared up just fine.

If you're expecting a "hotel" type enviroment, this isn't the place for you. There are no amenities, no restaurants, no room service, no bellmen, no wi-fi etc. I am Manager for an upscale Marritott Resort and this is not a "hotel". We found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, but we really didn't require much from them.

The beach was great, empty and peaceful. We cannot wait to go back someday if our freinds will let us borrow their condo again.

Room Tip: Bring your own sheets and towels just in case. Call 24-hours in advance if you cannot arrive before...

We stayed at the Mustang Towers for a Diva Weekend in November. We had unit 802 (2br/2ba). It was pretty-much well-maintained, but showed it's age just a little. Nothing to complain about at all. Kitchen had good tools/appliances/etc. It was very easy for us to get to the beach, even with all the stuff we toted down there! The pool and hot tub area is nice - it was too chilly for us to get in the pool, but there were some kids who braved it. Would stay here again.

We arrived very excited about our vacation. The lady at the front counter, ( I didn't get her name) was not friendly or inviting at all. We got our keys and headed up to room 501 and was hit with a horrible odor of urine! The floors hadn't been swept or mopped. I swept them. There was no mop in the room or I would have mopped also. The bathrooms looked dirty. I cleaned them. The beds looked dirty. I washed the sheets. When you walked into the kitchen, it smelled as though someone had put fish in the garbage disposal and left it. It smelled horrible when you stood over the sink. We had a beautiful view but couldn't get over the smell and dirt. I know the room was older but could have been kept better. We won't be returning to Mustang Towers.

First off, I want to say that I was super nervous about renting at Mustang Towers based on the mixed reviews of this property. I booked a 15th floor 3-bedroom condo for a last minute beach trip for 8 members of my family. We were all ages: 72 years down to 6 years. This condo was perfect for us, as we all had a nice bed to sleep in - no couch rollouts or blow up mattresses. I will also preface this review to let you know that my family typically travels first class and books 5 star properties; however; our expectations were very realistic for this South Texas beach condo. We knew that we weren't booking a 5 star property.
The Mustang Towers property is old - probably was fabulous in the 70's. If you are looking to play tennis, book elsewhere. There are no nets on the tennis court. It looks as if the courts are closed indefinitely. The other common outside areas are great. The swimming pool is very nice and has some nice features that the kids thought were cool. There is an upper and lower level to the pool. The kids really loved that! There are shaded areas around the pool where those wishing to stay out of the sun can sit. There is a boardwalk to the beach with two shower areas to wash off sand. For those that complain about the property needing to be updated, I'm not completely sure where they are coming from. There isn't a lobby or any common areas, so I'm not sure what areas that those posters were referring to. The swimming pool/spa area looked new, the elevators were in fine condition (were fast & in good condition), the boardwalk and shower areas looked like new, so overall I thought that the property was fine. The property office was outdated, but we didn't even go in there, outside of checking in.
Speaking of the office - there are negative comments about the front staff in many reviews. I dealt with two different ladies - one of them being Cheryl - during our stay. While neither of the ladies was overly friendly, both were professional and handled our questions / reservations. We actually got to Port Aransas pretty early and tried to kill time since check-in wasn't until 4:00pm. The kids were tired and got pretty restless, so we decided to chance it and see if we could check in early. I was very grateful that we got to check in at 3:00 pm.
We rented unit # 1504. It was wonderful! The unit was clean and was exactly as advertised. We were so pleased with this unit that we have decided to make this our vacation rental year after year. The condo layout is really cool. The views are amazing and the balcony was large and where we hung out when we weren't on the beach. Since were on the 15th floor, we were level with the flights of pelicans that would fly by multiple times per day and also were level with the coast guard helicopter that would make his rounds. The kids loved this! If you rent this condo, make sure to bring binoculars. We used them often. The sunsets and sunrises were incredible.
We ate Trout Street Bar & Grille and were really disappointed. Other than that, we cooked all of our meals in the condo.
By the way, for those of you with kids, I brought a plastic wagaon with us and it was a God-send! We piled up all of our beach bags, towels, toys, chairs and umbrellas on that wagon (remember there were 3 families in total) and we wheeled everything from the condo to the beach each day. The wagon fit nicely in the elevator and also in the condo each night (we kept it in the washer/dryer room). It was nice not to have to tote any bags or heavy stuff.
There were other negative posts about bad odors from the units and also about the lack of service. We did not experience any bad odors at all. I came prepared, though, and brought Febreze along with other cleaning supplies. We did not have to use any of it. Other posters had negative comments about having to take out the trash, etc, before checking out. This is very common when you rent condos, and we were prepared for that. I think those posters have not rented units before and are accustomed to hotel service. When renting a condo, the renter is typically responsible for brining toilet paper, paper towels, a sponge for the kitchen, all soaps needed, and also responsible for taking out the trash and making sure the dishes are clean prior to leaving. We did all of this without a problem for checkout. In fact, there is a trash chute on each floor which makes it convenient to dump the trash, when needed.
Overall, we were pleased with Mustang Towers & with condo #1504. We will book this unit again.

Room Tip: Unit #1504 had amazing views, was well decorated, clean and we never heard noises from other units.

my family and i stayed at mustang towers four days july 11th and checked out on the 15th, for a cost of around 1300,00 dollars, and it was terrible! the sofa sleeper in the living was broken down with a thick wire that would stab you in the back, and when you picked up the pillows to fold it out there was a paper taped to it saying do not use,the chair in the living room had two pieces of metal holding the leg together, the vertigal blinds covering the patio doors did not work right, wall paper peeling off, there was a small wooden cart in the ketchen that when you opened the door it fell off in your hand, the sheets were not changed on one of the roll away beds, also in the kitchen most of the pots and pans looked dirty, with the no stick surface peeling off, this condo is advertised as luxury! but i think NOT!

Room Tip: dont stay hear!
