Here in the middle of beef country there are several established high-end well known steakhouses. There also sits an undiscovered steakhouse gem in Trent Texas. With a sense of humor the place dubs itself the Trent Country Club. It would take some imagination to actually see the golf course or the polo field; I missed the tennis courts and the swimming pool (though there may well be a stock tank in the vicinity.) The country club may lack those amenities, but the dining is First Rate. The Chef has a special knack for cooking a steak over a really hot fire- our large rib eye had a wonderfully crunchy exterior (it appeared charred but had no carbonish residue). The done exterior and warm red juicy center made for wonderful texture and taste. Seasonings are subtle and not over the top. The flavor of the steak relies more on the subtlety of what lean and fat on a good cut of beef do together when cooked the right way. The sides sound like they would be standard country cooking fare- but they are not. It's country cooking for foodies. Fries are hand-cut, the corn on the cob is a full cob and not overcooked. The fried squash is breaded in a manner that is crispy and flavorful and yet very thin breading and thick flavorful squash. It is truly the best fried summer squash I've ever eaten. The bread pudding is offered with either algerita berry sauce or a wild plum sauce. Both are incredibly good although my personal preference leans towards the plum sauce for the tartness. I give a nod to the Chef's use of obscure local fruits. Algerita berries are not particularly well known outside of this area, I should think. The decor is homespun yet busy... a cross between granny chic, ode to John Wayne, and a hint of mardi gras. The decor nods to local points of reference as well as historical figures. The menu is very modestly priced. We split the large rib eye that comes with two sides, had two glasses of tea, added one extra side, and split a bread pudding, and it was under $40.00 before tip.
This place is so perfect... I worry it will get discovered and people will flood in, and the magic will be lessened. This place still has a magic that drifted away from most other steakhouses in the area long ago. This place makes for a great destination evening! A bonus on this cold January evening was the opportunity to admire the sharpness of a starry skies away from city lights.

Trent Country Club is owned and operated by a local resident who has had restaurants for years. I have been eating his cooking for many years and it's like going home every time I go there. Just reading the menu is entertaining in itself and eating what you ordered is a country delight. There are great steaks, chicken, fish & seafood, ribs etc with a good variety of country cooked sides to accompany these great dishes.
The atmosphere is extremely relaxed and country to the core so don't expect china and crystal at your table but the food is hard to beat anywhere within 50 miles. It is definitely worth the drive to get there and be sure to take some time to look at the view of the surrounding plateau and plain geology around the place.

Different, basic and great food. 2-3 miles off I-20 on FM 1085 south and it's well worth the drive. Steaks, shrimp, chicken, fish and normal steak house type sides. BYOB. They don't sell alcohol but do have a donation kegerator. Will definitely go back.

People are friendly. We had the fried catfish and ribs which were both very good. Our daughter and her boyfriend who are from Kentucky came with us and both said they would come back. I'm sure we will go back when we have the chance. The catch is that it is only open on Friday and Saturday nights from 5:30 to 9:00 and a little out of the way. But it is worth the drive.

I have had dinner here many many times. This is the best food in the entire Abilene area. This place is located about 5 miles south of Trent Texas which is 14 miles West of Abilene Texas. If you go to Abilene on a weekend do not miss it!! It is only open in Friday and Saturday nights. It's one of the best steaks I have ever had and that says alit being that I am from Dallas Texas. Be sure and order the squash appetizer and the catfish is amazing!! It's BYOB and fantastic fun atmosphete. Don't miss it!
