We stayed one week at the Black Bear Lodge run by Wyndham. We had daily house keeping, full kitchen, two adequate baths and bedrooms, plus pull out couch. it was adequate for two families and and two children. The front desk was efficient. The freshly baked cookies always welcomed. The only complaint we had was the snow was so plentiful that it was sometimes melting and refreezing before maintenance could attend to it. Overall, a great time.

Stayed: March 2017

Dear Guest,
Thanks for your review! It sounds like you had a lovely trip. All that snow is what we call a champagne problem. We love the fresh snow, but it makes for lots of work! We hope you'll be back to see us again soon.

Cheers,

Let me start by saying that, the main reason to rent a condo at Black Bear Lodge is if you like most people cannot or will not pay $1200/night for a basic hotel room at the Stein/St. Regis / Montage. If you can or are willing to pay for those properties, then you should.

For the rest of us this place is all about value. The building is directly across the street from the Stein Eriksen, mid mountain on Deer Valley, one of the premier skiing destinations in the US. So to be able to pay less than $1000/night for a 2br or more condo in this location is a steal. So for this reason alone you must be willing to forgo some of the luxuries you'd expect when paying so much. Such as a spa on site, a restaurant on site and even updated aesthetic. But what it's lacking in infrastructure it makes up for in location.

Here's a list of things within a 5-10 minute walk:

1. The Spa at Stein Eriksen
2. The Lodge at Stein Eriksen (fire pits/restaurant where you can watch skiers)
3. The Sterling Ski Lift
4. The Deer Valley Ski rental and valet service (they let you check your skis in for free steps from the lift over night)
5. The mid mountain restaurant where skiers can have lunch with non skiers
6. Chateaux Deer Valley (hotel with a restaurant/ fireplace)

So for a reduced price you can still have access to all the wonderful stuff mid mountain at Deer Valley. If possible I'd try for a unit on the 4th (top) floor since the ceilings are vaulted and the views from the hot tubs are pretty great.

I booked a trip for my wife and I and another couple to visit the Silver Lake area of Deer Valley via HomeAway. So, it was a privately owned (not Wyndham managed) unit. Here are thoughts on our stay in Unit 402.

Arrival / Check-in:
Greg, the owner, was wonderful and gave us the door code before arrival, so there was no formal check-in, just let ourself in after check-in time.

Service:
Be aware that if you stay in a privately managed unit, the Wyndham amenities may not be available to you, such as complimentary shuttle service. It was not a hassle for us however, as we either walked to the slopes, or took an Uber around town. Otherwise, we did not have any maid service come.

Room:
For the cost, the unit was of tremendous value. It was a two bedroom, top floor unit. Large living area with gas fireplace, great kitchen area, nice balcony with incredible views, and two queen bedrooms with their own bath. Feels like a mountain chalet with the exposed log walls.

Property:
The property overall is well kept and has a heated garage at the bottom with elevators to your floor, so it is very convenient and easy to navigate. There are outdoor pool and patio areas, but we visited in the winter, so did not use them.

Location:
This it likely the best part of Black Bear Lodge. It is literally across the street from the Stein Ericksen Lodge and the Silver Lake Village / lifts. I guess you can't officially call it ski in / ski out, but it sure felt like it, considering Deer Valley has complimentary ski valet. Home run with the location.

Overall Impression: We definitely are planning our return to this location. For the price, relative to the rest of Deer Valley resorts, this is the best deal in town.

Room Tip: Would recommend a room with view facing the mountain

We had a great trip. Glad we stayed at Black Bear Lodge. (Unit 408A)

LOCATION:
Easy walk (1 block?) to the lifts. Deer Valley has complimentary ski and boot storage, so you can leave all of your gear at the bottom of the lift and not lug it to the Lodge. Free hotel shuttle to downtown, and they're very accommodating. Plenty of shops and restaurants right by the lodge, or go downtown to eat and shop.

THE ROOM:
Unit 408A was spacious, and we had lots of room to spread out. The loft is best fit for kids or young adults -- it has a narrow spiral staircase to access, and you have to duck and/or climb over a low wall to get to the beds upstairs. But it's very much OK for guests who don't mind that; and it's quite safe for kids.
The kitchen is well-supplied with pans and utensils for cooking, baking, etc. There are no condiments provided (by law, unopened containers etc). The shuttle will gladly take you to the grocery stores in town.
The bedrooms and bathrooms are relatively recently updated, clean and well kept. The master bedroom window faces the outdoor, common walkway between units, and overlooks the outdoor pool and hot tub, so I can understand why some reviewers mentioned noise. We didn't have much trouble with noise, but it would be useful to have a "white noise" app on your phone to mask it.

STAFF:
The lodge staff were great. Very polite, helpful, patient, and eager to please. They went out of their way to accommodate our requests, large and small. This includes the shuttle drivers as well. (The older reviews that complained of rude or unhelpful staff must be outdated by new management or staff.)

FOOD
There is no food onsite, but there are several good restaurants within a very short walk around Silver Lake Village. The lodge has a complimentary coffee stand and light snacks in the lobby.

SHOPPING and GEAR
There are plenty of ski wear and ski gear stores nearby. I give a shout-out to Ski 'N See which is just up the street from the lodge: they have good gear at very reasonable prices for the neighborhood.
