Description: August First is locally owned and has been serving great pastries, coffee, breakfast and lunch since 2009. A true local favorite, located in a bright and open renovated industrial garage. A very Vermont experience with fresh and delicious food served by a friendly staff. Everything is made from scratch!

Though known more for its breakfast, August First proved for us to be a great place for lunch too. The country bread makes the sandwiches, and the grain bowls are fresh and filling. The available outdoor seating is an added bonus, and don't miss the excellent chocolate brownie for a treat.

All the makings of a great little spot...the kind of earnest little place you really want to like. But if fell short at our breakfast. We both had the bacon breakfast skillet. "Scrambled eggs, kale, tomatoes, home fries, rosemary, shredded cabot cheddar, toast". Sounds good right?
Our meals arrived barely warm and in plastic skillets. Obviously not what the meals were cooked in. My suspicion is there was not a skillet involved at all. All the ingredients were there but not very much of any of them. The home fries were mushy so I had the feeling they were waiting for me rather than cooked when I ordered. A few minutes to crisp them up on the griddle would be an improvement. The rosemary was very minimal. The "toast" was un-toasted bread and unremarkable bread for a bakery. Good ideas; poor execution.

The bakery is right next to the register so it's easy to pre-select the ones most appealing. In addition to the bakery there is also a good selection of sandwiches, bowls and breakfast items. The atmosphere is very casual and they have garage door with windows that open up on nicer days. I tend to go with a sandwich with a pastry for dessert and take my time eating. There is no big rush and there is even limited seating outside.

Cute breakfast place right off Main Street. We walked over from Hilton. Unique menu- fresh bakery items. Amazing maple biscuits. Avocado egg toast was delicious. Egg skillets yummy yummy.
