We had checked the menu for this place earlier but we decided to go elsewhere for diner. We stopped back later for an after dinner drink (because we liked the vibe) and were seated in the bar next to a young woman eating alone. She was served this delicious smelling plate of food. We asked what it was and she shrugged and said, “I just pick anything from the menu, everything they do is fabulous!” She told us she comes to the Hen every time she’s in Burlington. With a recommendation like that we booked a reservation for the following evening. The menu changes daily and the ingredients come fresh from local farms (farm-to-table). There are several items in each menu category; “Share”, “Small”, “Large”, “For Two” and “Sides”. You basically construct your own dinner combination of dishes. We started out with the cold beet salad and smoked pork on grilled bread small plates, then split the halibut large plate with a side order of roasted potatoes with tarragon aioli. The food was delicious and every dish had multiple layers of flavors that we’re not able to adequately describe. We found splitting the large plate with a couple small plates gave us the right amount of food. The “For Two” plates were equivalent of 2 large plates. It was a fun dinner with excellent service in a lively room with a definite “foodie” vibe.
The only negative (which we unfortunately experience everywhere in summer) was the red wine was served too warm. There is no excuse for serving a warm glass of red wine, particularly in a foodie place like the Hen.
