“Not the Ritz, but Charming”
Reviewed 18 October 2011

We spent a long summer working and remodeling and wanted to get away to a low key place where we wouldn't have to dress or pay through the nose to relax.......this hotel fit the bill perfectly. Kathy, the on-site manager was very accommodating and available. The outdoor jacuzzi was perfect. Our room had seen better days but overall, the atmosphere was like staying at a friend's house, very casual and unassuming. Breakfast next door was great as was the meal at 158 East Main, which was superb. Although this gem could use an infusion of cash and updating immediately, it still met our needs at a very nice price.

We spent a night here on our way to Canada, and had a great stay in our charming, well decorated room - with jacuzzi tub! We enjoyed eating in the pub downstairs, and getting breakfast nearby the next morning. This inn totally exceeded my expectations. It's charming, comfortable and unique.

I hadn't done much research on Smugglers' Notch Inn before our visit. It was merely located in an area we wanted to visit. We had planned to stay only one night, but after settling into our room, we decided to make it two nights. It is a beautifully decorated and well-maintained old inn. I fell in love with it as soon as I walked up the stairs and saw the wonderful slant of the floors. The room was most comfortable and the bathroom more than adequate (there were a couple of loose floor tiles that would stick to your feet. A bit annoying, but nothing to complain about). The attached restaurant was good, but we found one we liked better about a block away. The attached bakery (The Mix) is excellent!!!! Any restaurant where I can get a variety of loose tea for breakfast is tops with me. The location is excellent as well, although there is a bit of street noise. The only drawback we experienced was with the room temperature. The room was quite stuffy at night even with the window completely open. It wasn't cool enough for heat and not hot enough for A/C, so the window was it for regulating the temperature. I would definitely recommend this inn and would be happy to return.

We wanted to stay at the inn, asI had seen it on an earlier trip about 20 years ago and found it delightful. We were drawn to it by its historic significance and knew it wouldn't be like staying at a modern place.
When we arrived, the owner was in the office. Nice fellow but not very talkative. He advised us the restaurant was closed (which was very disappointing as the website makes it look very attractive) and that we were to drop out keys in the hallway when we were to leave 2 days later - that was the last we saw of any staff (or any other guests) for the entire weekend. I also believe that the jacuzzi was non-operational but wasn't an issue for us.
The room was old, complete with warped floors and ill-fitting door, but was clean and comfortable. The only eerie thing about the stay was the fact that we seemed to be pretty much alone in the place.
We didn't visit the pub, but did have breakfast at the bakery on Sunday morning before leaving. It was nothing special and overpriced. It appears that the bakery is just rented out to an outside business person and isn't owned by the Inn.
There was no one to chat with in the lobby, and no fire in the fireplace, so we spent our time at the place in our room It's a good thing we did a lot of sightseeing because the inn didn't offer anything to do.
All in all, it's a nice place if you like historic inns, but don't expect to eat, see anyone, or see any staff. As much as I would like to stay there again at some point, I don't think we will. Too bad, if it were run properly it would be great.

such a cute place. the bakery was too die for, so good yet naughty(crme brule french toast) The room was decoarated in french toile and a lovely big bed. The owner was friendly, had a roaring fire in the main sitting room, a porch with a swing & adfarondack chairs & a one man band downstairs playing beatles, bob dylan etc....& the food was great. They launched a local vodka & gave away cocktails & recipes. We has their barbecue sauce with our dinner, OMG, they should sell it!! There's a place called(i think) bella Note, they had keroke...it was fun hanging out with the locals. This hotel was romantic, clean, lively & quant...+ it was 5 minutes away from smuggs.....we loved it!!

Our stay at the Smugglers Notch Inn was unplanned, my husband had booked a condo at the ski resort but we were able to come up a day earlier and decided to stay our first night in the area. After a days drive with a toddler and an unexpected delay because the route we planned on from Stowe is impassable in the winter (the hotel we planned to stay in was over an hour away because of the snow, rather than a short ten minute ride) I called up the Inn to see if they had an available room and to check their rates. The low rate was a surprise! On the phone Lisa was friendly and helpful. After quite a good dinner at the Family Table (just down the street) we dragged ourselves over and checked in and found quiet, clean, nicely decorated and comfortable accommodations. Honestly, we were delighted and relieved after such a tiring day.

We checked out early the next morning to head over to the resort for a full day of skiing before checking into our condo there. After staying at both the inn and the resort's condo I would say that we preferred the inn. Obviously it isn't nearly as convenient as staying slope side but it was quiet, clean, and the food in the attached bakery was excellent. The service at the inn was helpful, and casual in the best possible way.

The one thing that made staying at the condo essential for us was having the use of a kitchen (really helped ease the cost of our vacation). Otherwise, for our family the inn was the superior experience. We would absolutely return.

I stayed at the Inn a couple weekends ago as a place to stay during my ski weekend at Smuggler's Notch. After seeing the mixed bag of reviews on here, I wasn't quite sure what to expect; however, I was very pleased upon arrival. The Inn is an older building and has all the great historic charm and atmosphere. The downstairs has a cozy living room with comfy couches and a roaring fire, and even has a large selection of boardgames from which to choose. Also downstairs is a restaurant (which I didn't eat at but it looked nice) and a breakfast place. I cannot say enough good things about the breakfast--the selection was good (standard eggs, bacon, homefries to creme brulee french toast), the food was excellent, and the service was very attentive and friendly. They even have homemade cranberry juice and homemade breads. Yum. The Inn also has a tavern in the basement, which was a great spot for apres-ski. The food selections were pretty standard fare but was very tasty and the service/prices were great. Plus, it beats having to drive anywhere.
The rooms were small but well-maintained and cute (just what I expect when staying in VT). Our room had a queen-sized bed and bureau with a tv with satellite mounted on the wall. The bathroom was pretty small, but very clean. Plus, the shower had good water pressure and hot water (which in my opinion is the most important aspect!).
Pros: Great location for skiing. Smug's Notch is only 10 minutes down the road. Three different dining options (if you include the breakfast place). Great food. Friendly and accomodating service. Cozy and charming atmosphere. Gift card included in room rate to be used at their eateries ($5 pp/pn).
Cons: Limited parking (which I'm assuming is more of an issue during the winter with the large snow piles). Thin walls (remember it's an old building. Noise carries, especially people walking down the hallway and the street plows). Heat--we were told our room was the hottest in the building. It was so hot, we had the window half-way open all night (it was 0 degrees out), and we were still too warm; however, our friends stayed in the room next to ours, and it was much, much cooler (but with a blanket it would be comfortable).
Overall, I would definitely recommend. The pros much outweigh the cons. Nice place to stay for a quick getaway. Plus, the rate was a very good value.
