We have had the pleasure of staying here on 3 separate occasions and have been impressed by the attention to detail, fantastic service and reasonable prices to stay at such a jewel. A room steeped in history, and period furnishings, can be had for as little at $175 a night. That price also includes a lovely continental breakfast and use of kayaks, hiking trails, and farm and mansion tours. The Inn was started in 1886, when Dr. William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb began acquiring farmland on the shores of Lake Champlain to create a model agricultural estate. Shelburne Farms began a rebirth in 1972, when family descendants founded a nonprofit organization of the same name, dedicated to conservation education. As stewards of the property, the nonprofit has placed much of the land under conservation easements, and preserved and rehabilitated the buildings to new uses. In 2001 the property became a National Historic Landmark and to me, a jewel in the crown of Vermont.

Room tip: Rooms facing Lake Champlain are stunning

We were fortunate to be able to stay the last weekend in mid-October before they close for the winter and it was magical. Sure, it was a bit chilly at night since the rooms are not heated but the comforters are ample and cozy and the Inn is beautiful. We loved the grounds, the views of Lake Champlain, the tour of the Farm, the children all coming to see the making of cheese, the milking of the cows. We walked many of the trails, and all were just spectacularly beautiful. We thought the food was great. it is so wonderful that it is "farm to table" and yes, they make delicious cheese. We had to buy some to take home. All the staff were kind and very helpful.

Room tip: They are building an addition that is wheelchair accessible. No elevator in the inn, all the rooms require one to walk up stairs.

I love old historic hotels so I was in heaven here. This was built by a Vanderbilt daughter and contains 75% original furnishings. Very friendly staff who take pride in what they are preserving. The grounds are beautiful. Peaceful. Romantic. Well worth it.

The food sadly is not as not a grand as the setting. To be clear, Shelburne Farms is a Very special, very unique place. And maybe it doesn't matter that the food is more suited to a midwestern Hilton.

The food is pleasant enough, but ordinary. The servers as well seem pleasant but more for a paycheck than commitment. The coffee is really terrible, so all and all it doesn't seem to be on a par with the rest of the farms operations.

I'm of mixed mind as I don't want this unique place to be only for the wealthy. The farm has as important mission to teach our kids about making cleaner water, more fresh air and healthier food.

So if you go, enjoy the views and the magic.

This old restored mansion on a 1500 acre sustainable farm was a highlight of our trip. The Inn is right on Lake Champlain and the rooms have windows looking out to the lake, The building has been restored beautifully and though it is not modern in any sense, it is very comfortable. There are walking trails throughout the property and we walked and walked, along the lake and in the woods. It was a great place to stay.

Room tip: room facing lake is best
