“Great scenery, comfortable rooms, friendly staff”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

Our family visited the Trapp Family Lodge for three nights during April school vacation. The surroundings can't be beat. You're up in the mountains and there are miles of cross country skiing, snowshoeing and mountain biking trials on the property.

We stayed in a suite in the main lodge. The bed was large comfortable and the living area had two pull-out couches for the kids, a dorm-size refrigerator and a coffee maker. There were TVs in both rooms. Everything was tidy and clean.

The ground level of the lodge has a library, lounge, restaurant, and some common rooms with comfortable seating. Complimentary coffee is available in the mornings and tea and cookies are served each afternoon. In the evenings, there's entertainment in the lounge provided by John the piano guy, who was friendly and eager to play requests. There's also beer on tap from the on-site brewery.

The staff could not have been more friendly. When I alerted the front desk that we didn't have enough towels for the five of us, they had somebody deliver extras to the room within a half-hour, and extra towels were left for us each day of our stay.

There's an on-site fitness center with a nice indoor pool, sauna, and outdoor hot tub. There's also a bakery where you can get coffee and breakfast and sit out on the deck among the mountains.

We had a great time and would visit again.

Some minor criticisms:

The shower in our room was impossible to control. No matter how much adjusting we did, our showers always ended with a cascade of scalding hot water.

The housekeeping staff failed to supply us with sufficient toilet paper, so we ran out toward the end of our stay.

We have visited Trapp Family Lodge for a number of years as time share exchangers - they not only have a wonderful hotel, but also great two bedroom "condos" that are a perfect vacation getaway for families or groups of friends. Two years ago we purchased a time share there because we love the place so much.

We recently spent a week there and can't say enough about their hospitality. They have a lovely dining room and lounge. We so enjoyed the piano player who brought a sense of sophistication and savoir faire to our pre-dinner glass of wine.

Their spa and pool area are equally appealing. We've only visited in the winter months, but in the warm weather they have tennis courts and a large outdoor pool as well. One of the real winter treats is their top notch cross country ski course and the warming hut at the top of the trail where you can get a piping hot bowl of homemade soup, or a hearty sandwich as a reward for the climb to the top!

They're a short drive to the big Stowe Mountain for downhill skiing, and for those who just want to sit home and read, the condos have fireplaces and great views of the meadows and distant peaks. It's a real treasure and we can't wait to go back!

This resort probably has the best cross country ski trails in the entire state of Vermont. They're well groomed, well planned and extensive. The only criticism of the trails is minor - many of them are exposed to the northwest winds (and hence wind chills!) that are so prevalent in Vermont during the winter - Note: the resort is located above 1,500 ft and the winds at this elevation are vastly different from the mild airflows at ground level. There is adequate shelter in heavily-treed areas so that on windy days it is fairly easy to select trails out of the uncomfortable frigid chills.

The rest of the resort is pretty average... rooms, food and service. In terms of value it's probably fairly priced but maybe a tad expensive if you're not a skier.

If you're looking for a cosy family getaway, you won't find it here unless you own one of the (constantly touted) time share cottages that are packed like sardines around the main lodge and resort.

During Spring and Summer the resort offers pleasant walks and great views but again can be subject to cold winds... even in July!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor WITH A BALCONY have pretty good views regardless of which direction they face...

Our first trip to the Trapp Family Lodge was when our children were very small. That was more than 27 years ago. This year, my wife and I visited on our own. We happened to catch an exceptional late winter weekend. The lodge sits at the top of Luce Hill and offers some incredible views over the Stowe valley and the Worcester Range in the distance. I travel all over the world for business. I have stayed at some of the finest hotels around the world. Everytime I set foot on this property, I feel like I am in someones home. The staff is attentive, but not overbearing. We were greeted like long lost friends, not just another guest. Our room was on the second floor of the main lodge. It was beautifully decorated with local crafts and hints of Austrian charm. The furniture was in very good condition. I felt like I was back home in my own family room. The bedding was clean and comfortable. Our room had a door to the large wrap around deck. The deck was a great place to catch some late day sun and relax taking in the crisp mountain air. We had lunch at the deli bakery, seated on the deck. The food was fresh and tasty. Don't forget to try the beer from the Trapp brewery. The lounge offered a comfortable place to relax prior to and after dinner. The music was live (piano) and not overly loud. We dined in the main dining room. The menu offers something for everyone. If you want to sample the classic cuisine of the Tyrol, you have several choices. My wife had a rack of lamb that was prepared perfectly. I chose a hearty chicken dish that was a fine way to end my day. The menu changes with the seasons. Many of the items on your plate are produced locally. It reflects the attitude of sustainability and care of the environment; a hallmark of the Trapp Family. Years ago, we would see Maria visiting with guests as they enjoyed their time at her home. She would be proud to know that her home is well taken care of and still offers guests a place of refuge from the hustle and bustle of 21st century life.

Room Tip: Any room facing the Worcester Range offers incredible views in the distance. A room on the second f...

We loved it here because of its Austrian roots, the buildings and grounds are very nice with great views. Another factor was our dogs - we like to bring them whenever possible and Trapp made it easy. We were able to get a one bedroom suite in good shape, with easy access to the outside and good areas to walk them - all without having to interact with other guests.

When it was suggested staying at the Trapp Family Lodge we were not totally sure. Much as we enjoyed the sound of music as well as the wonder of Salzburg, we were not sure of being immersed in the experience. That was a mistake as it is not over the top but introduced tastefully. As for the overall facilities for enjoying the great outdoors, it has it all. Great hiking, great location and great hotel. Staff were excellent and made the visit exceptional. The director, Sam Von Trapp, grandson of the famous Maria, showed that being part of such a famous family did not preclude him from seeking to make visitors feel at home and we all appreciated this. We will return!

Initially our visit to the Trapp Family Lodge in 2010 was to be a once in a lifetime trip. However my husband and I have just returned from our third visit and would love to bring our chidren and grandchildren with us within the next year. Whether you are a couple or a family looking for a get away the Trapp Lodge has beautiful surroundings inside and out, laughter, unsurpassed hospitality, classical music. We visited in winter. I enjoyed on property cross country skiing, snow shoeing up to the log cabin at the top of the hill and having soup for lunch (so much fun). To let you know my husband doesn't ski and didn't try but enjoyed the lodge equally! We visited local downhill skiing resorts (ex:approx 10 min away Mt Mansfield), the town of Stowe, country roads. There are many indoor activities such as yoga, wine tasting, hot tub, exercise room, pool, cooking lessons, just siiting around with the aviance of flowers and a real wood burning fireplace reading a book etc., etc., etc. There are children's activities also. We could go on and on and hopefully will be able to visit this sumer/fall which we hear is wonderful and of course next winter (that is a given). When asked by friends how to describe my experience at the lodge I say: The Trapp Family Lodge surrounds you with a spiritual essence that wraps your soul and transcends you to a level of peace and harmony!!!!!! It doesn't get any better!!!!!
