What a gem! My husband and I came to Vermont with friends for an event and the 1824 House Inn was the perfect place to stay. We were greeted by the lovely innkeeper Gwen, who was very attentive and made sure we were all comfortable. Everyone enjoyed the delicious breakfast. A few in our party said the pancakes were the best they ever had! It was also super convenient for us to stay there because the event we came for was also at the inn - in the big barn and spread out over their 14 acres. The river is steps across the street and perfect for a dip on a hot day or to walk alongside it on the path. Shops and restaurants are easy to drive to. We really enjoyed our stay here. Thanks Gwen!

We had a fantastic weekend and staying at the 1824 House Inn made it even better. The warm greetings from the moment we arrived set the tone for a relaxing stay. The Inn Keeper, Gwen was very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. She knew all of our names instantly and made us feel so comfortable. The daily breakfast was delicious!! We also enjoyed the yummy cookies, tea & coffee!

I was invited for a weekend vacation here with my boyfriend's work crew back in February of this year. The inn is simply amazing! Perfect for winter with a nice hill in the back to sled down and every room having its own heat source! Every view from the inn is gorgeous, even from the top of the hill, its placed nicely in the valley! Each room was spot-free! You could tell how old the inn was but you could not tell how worn in she was!

Upon arriving, as it was our first time in Vermont and we're not much for skiing, we found we were fairly close to everything! The inn features a variety of coupon books and brochures in the office area, which was perfect for research! Being hikers, we were at the perfect location to hike the Mad River Path, with one of the trails starting right across the street!

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Orleans Room, which we were skeptical at first, as it's located directly above the kitchen. We were worried breakfast would be noisy, but the walls of the inn seem pretty thick and we were never awoken by noises from other rooms! And it's true, the Orleans Room was perfect for smelling the bacon in the morning!

We had such a wonderful stay, we hope to come back to the inn again! The innkeeper was very kind and informative to us. We had rented out the whole house and brought 3 dogs with us, so I imagined we were a teeny bit of a hassle! We never felt a grudge and we were consistently treated with respect!

Room Tip: The Caledonia Room is the only room for pets, and is certainly the gem of the property with access to the back patio!

We enjoyed a nice winter visit to the 1824 House this past weekend. We stayed in the Caledonia room, which has a wonderful view outside from the bed. Breakfast was made for us each morning. One morning we enjoyed a ham & cheese omelet. The other morning, we had a frittata and yogurt with granola. The food was so tasty and the portions were large and filling. We're getting married at the 1824 House in the fall. We love their view of the mountains and their old rustic barn for dancing. The innkeeper and staff couldn't be any nicer and welcoming.

There are lots of nicer, prettier and better run inns and B&BS in the Mad River Valley to chose from. The owner is not a resident innkeeper, and the inn is not well maintained. Plumbing problems persisted during our five day stay, our rooms were not cleaned, and the innkeeper was unable to address our needs in site preparations for our wedding. It is lovely venue for a destination wedding, but the spectacular setting did not compensate for the substandard service. The so-called event coordinator (daughter of the owner) was not present on site during the wedding preparations, was unprofessional and not responsive to our needs, and was rude to outside vendors and guests alike. Our guests stayed at various locations in the Waitsfield area and all had more positive experiences than our wedding party.

Room Tip: Avoid a second floor room where your head will head the ceiling and you can't stand up in the shower.

Emily S, Manager at 1824 House Inn, responded to this reviewResponded January 20, 2016

Thank you, Paula, for taking the time to share your experience at the 1824 House. My name is Emily, I am the property manager and a member of the family that owns the property. The Inn was indeed built in 1824, and while it has been renovated extensively, old houses occasionally have problems. It is unfortunate that your stay coincided with a small maintenance issue, but I ask for your understanding and acceptance of our efforts to remedy the problem. I assure you that our family invests both time and money in order to maintain the buildings on the property, while respecting the country charm our guests expect. The miscommunication regarding the responsibilities of our innkeeper in terms of wedding site preparations was unintended, and we have amended our documentation as a result. If you have occasion to travel to the Mad River Valley in the future, I would like to invite you to return to the 1824 House so that we may provide you with an experience that more accurately represents our commitment to impeccable customer service.
